Google’s Gemini app has crossed 1 billion monthly active users, the company announced on its official blog, calling it “the fastest-growing product in Google’s history.” The milestone matters most for Android users, where Gemini is increasingly replacing Google Assistant as the default AI layer across the operating system.

How People Are Using Gemini
The usage data Google shared reveals a voice-first product: 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini rather than typing, with busy parents 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks. One in five Gemini Live interactions go beyond voice, with people using live camera feeds and screen sharing for real-time problem-solving.
On the creative side, Gemini generates over 150 million images every day. Students are heavy users too — 38% of school-related requests include an attachment. And on Android specifically, Gemini can now automate actions across more than 40 popular apps, handling tasks like booking rides and reserving tables.
Even Apple users are showing up: Google says there are over 100 million active Gemini users on iOS, with macOS power users prompting roughly twice as frequently as users on other platforms.
The Number Deserves Context
One billion is a massive number, but it comes with an asterisk. These are self-reported figures from Google with no published definition of what counts as a “monthly active user” and no independent audit. A significant share of that growth comes from Gemini being preinstalled on Android devices and progressively swapped in as the default assistant across Android, Google Search, and Workspace — not necessarily from users actively choosing it over alternatives. Google does not break out how many of that billion are users who deliberately opened the Gemini app versus those who encountered it through a system prompt or an integrated surface they were already using.
That said, the trajectory from roughly 950 million users reported during Google’s Q2 2026 earnings to crossing the billion mark by August is consistent growth, and the voice and multimodal engagement numbers suggest at least a substantial portion of users are doing more than passively encountering the product.
Google says its goal remains “to make Gemini the most personal, proactive, and powerful assistant” as it builds toward the next billion users. With the Gemini Live expansion to smart home devices already underway and deeper Android integration arriving with each feature drop, Gemini’s footprint across the Android ecosystem is only set to grow — whether users explicitly opt in or not.
