Sunbird Revives Its iMessage App for Android: Same Promise, Same Risk, $2.99 a Month

Sunbird Messaging, the app that promised to bring iMessage to Android before a security scandal forced it offline in 2023, is back on the Google Play Store as of August 5, 2026. The relaunched app costs $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year, with a 14-day free trial.

Sunbird consolidates iMessage, Google Messages (RCS), and SMS into a single Android inbox, giving users blue bubbles, full iMessage reactions, replies, and high-quality video sharing in group chats with iPhone users. A new Priority Inbox feature splits messages into Primary and Secondary tabs, available immediately at launch.

Why Sunbird Shut Down and What Changed

The original Sunbird app shut down in late 2023 after security researchers discovered it was routing iMessage credentials through its servers in a way that exposed user data — a serious man-in-the-middle vulnerability that also derailed Nothing Chats, which had been built on Sunbird’s technology. The company now claims its infrastructure has been rebuilt, stating that “any message moving through our infrastructure is protected in transit and released once it’s delivered.”

That claim deserves skepticism. Sunbird is asking users to trust the same company that already failed catastrophically on the exact same promise. The press release offers no detail on independent security audits, no third-party verification, and no technical architecture disclosure beyond a marketing sentence. Users considering the app should weigh the convenience of iMessage access against handing their Apple credentials to a third party with a documented history of mishandling them.

AI Features and Messenger Integration Coming Later

Sunbird plans to roll out “Sunbird Intelligence” AI features in Q3 2026, including a “Catch Me Up” tool that summarizes missed messages across conversations. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger integration is also planned for the same quarter. CEO Danny Mizrahi framed the relaunch around the group-chat problem rather than just blue bubbles:

“Blue bubbles are just the surface. The real problem is that an Android user in a group chat still breaks it for everyone: reactions, replies, high quality video, and group management often just do not work. Sunbird fixes that, so the Android user becomes a full participant, and their iPhone friends get the experience they expect too.”

The Market Context

Sunbird’s own survey data claims 38% of Android users have missed messages due to iMessage incompatibility, 30% have considered switching to iPhone over it, and 23% of iPhone users said green bubbles would be a dating dealbreaker. The company reports an 8% free-trial-to-paid conversion rate, which it describes as six to eight times the industry average for subscription apps.

Whether there is still a large enough market for a paid iMessage bridge is an open question. Since Sunbird’s 2023 shutdown, Apple and Google adopted RCS as a cross-platform standard, closing some of the feature gap that made Sunbird appealing in the first place — though RCS still does not deliver iMessage-native reactions, Tapbacks, or the social currency of blue bubbles in group chats.
