Gmail Drops ‘Send As’ for Third-Party Email Addresses Starting January 2027

Google will discontinue Gmail’s “Send As” feature for third-party email addresses starting January 2027, according to an update to the company’s official Gmail Help documentation. After that date, users will no longer be able to send emails from Yahoo, Outlook, or custom domain addresses through Gmail’s web or mobile apps.

The change also eliminates two related features: Gmailify, which let users manage non-Gmail accounts within the Gmail interface, and web-based POP mail fetching, which pulled messages from external accounts into a unified Gmail inbox. Together, these removals end Gmail’s long-standing role as a hub for consolidating multiple email identities into a single interface.

What Still Works After January 2027

Google has clarified that several related features remain unaffected. Native Gmail mobile app multi-account support — where users switch between separate Google accounts within the app — will continue working. Gmail-to-Gmail aliases and Google Workspace “Send as” options are also staying. The change specifically targets third-party, non-Google email addresses used through Gmail’s send-as system.

Why This Matters for Android Users

For many Android users, Gmail is the default email app, and “Send As” was one of the reasons they never needed a second email client. Freelancers with custom domain addresses, anyone maintaining a legacy Yahoo or Outlook address alongside Gmail, and small business owners who routed work email through their personal Gmail all lose that convenience.

Google has not publicly explained the reasoning, but the practical effect narrows Gmail toward being a Google-only email client rather than the universal inbox it once positioned itself as. Users who rely on the feature have until January 2027 to find an alternative — desktop clients like Thunderbird or Outlook, a dedicated email provider for their custom domain, or a paid Google Workspace plan that retains “Send as” functionality for domain-linked addresses.

The timing is worth noting: Google is simultaneously adding AI-powered features like “Help me write” custom edits and BCC recipient warnings, investing in Gmail’s future as a smarter client while quietly trimming the legacy plumbing that made it flexible. For users who valued that flexibility, the message is clear — Gmail is becoming a Google email app, not an everything-email app.
