SpaceX has officially confirmed plans to build a terrestrial mobile network that will compete directly with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, turning Starlink Mobile from a satellite-only service into a full hybrid wireless carrier. The announcement came during the company’s earnings call, its first since going public in June 2026.
SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell told analysts the company intends to win customers away from the established carriers. “I anticipate us being able to acquire quite a few of their customers because I think our service will be better,” she said. The ambition rattled markets — AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile shares all dropped in after-hours trading following the call.
How Starlink Mobile’s Hybrid Network Will Work
Rather than building the kind of expensive, large-scale cell towers traditional carriers rely on, SpaceX plans to deploy a large number of small ground stations — essentially Starlink dishes that also broadcast in mobile spectrum bands. CEO Elon Musk described the approach: “Instead of having to deploy these very expensive and difficult to locate large cellular base stations, we feel reasonably confident that we can deploy a large number of sort of small stations.” Shotwell added that SpaceX could “put a base station, a cellular base station, on the gear that holds a Starlink broadband dish,” effectively turning existing Starlink customer installations into miniature cell sites.
The terrestrial component is backed by SpaceX’s $17 billion acquisition of EchoStar, which gave the company 65 MHz of exclusive-use U.S. wireless spectrum — enough bandwidth to operate independently without routing traffic through a partner carrier. Those licenses are expected to fully transfer by late 2027.
Timeline and What It Means for Android Users
SpaceX says its next-generation V2 direct-to-cell satellites will begin deploying in Q2 2027, with Starlink Mobile consumer service launching in Q4 2027. The company has already doubled its subscriber base to 12 million and holds FCC approval for the acquired spectrum.
For Android users, this is significant beyond the usual carrier shuffle. Starlink Mobile promises to eliminate dead zones entirely by combining satellite coverage with ground-based cells — a persistent pain point for anyone outside major metro areas. The service is expected to support voice and video calls over apps like Signal and WhatsApp, and the hybrid approach could deliver download speeds up to 150 Mbps via satellite alone. If SpaceX delivers on even a fraction of these claims, it would introduce genuine price and coverage competition into a U.S. wireless market that has been a comfortable three-player oligopoly for years.
Whether the execution matches the ambition remains to be seen. Building a terrestrial network — even a distributed, dish-based one — is a capital-intensive undertaking, and the established carriers have decades of infrastructure and spectrum depth. But SpaceX’s willingness to publicly commit to competing for their customers, rather than merely supplementing their coverage, marks a meaningful shift in the U.S. mobile landscape.
