WhatsApp Web Now Does Voice and Video Calls in Your Browser

WhatsApp Web calling is finally real. On 28 July 2026, WhatsApp announced that you can make and receive audio and video calls — one-on-one and group — directly from WhatsApp Web in a browser tab, with no app download required. It closes a gap that has existed since the desktop app got calling back in 2021, and it lands alongside four smaller calling changes: Call Transfer, Waiting Room, QuickHD and noise suppression.

What WhatsApp Web calling actually gives you

The browser version is not a stripped-down fallback. WhatsApp says you get screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab with your full call history and favourites — the same set you already have on your phone and on the desktop app. Calls are end-to-end encrypted, and in its announcement WhatsApp writes: “Your calls on the web are end-to-end encrypted — with no time limits and at no cost.”

That last part is worth pausing on, because it is the actual competitive point. Zoom’s free tier cuts group meetings off at 40 minutes. WhatsApp is explicitly promising no time limit and no charge on a platform most of the world already has an account on, reachable from a machine you cannot install software on — a work laptop that doesn’t allow app downloads, or a shared computer at college. WhatsApp names both of those scenarios in its post.

The four other calling changes

  • Call Transfer: move an active group call between devices without hanging up — start on your phone, hand it to WhatsApp Web or Desktop when you get home, or the other way round.
  • Waiting Room: create a call link with “Require approval to join” turned on and participants sit in a lobby until you admit them. This is the one genuinely useful privacy control here, and it only applies to link-based group calls.
  • QuickHD: high-definition video in the first few seconds of a call, instead of the usual blurry warm-up.
  • Noise suppression: background noise removal, toggleable at any time from in-call settings.

Rollout: don’t panic if you can’t see it

WhatsApp says the features are rolling out gradually and will reach everyone soon, with no country list, no date, and no staged schedule published. In practice that means a lot of accounts will open web.whatsapp.com today, find no call button, and assume something is broken. Nothing is. Server-side rollouts of this kind typically take weeks to finish across all markets, and there is no setting that speeds one up — updating your phone app, clearing browser cache or re-linking the device will not pull it forward.

One practical caveat WhatsApp does not spell out: WhatsApp Web still depends on your phone being linked, and browser-tab calls are only as good as the tab they run in. Expect background tabs, aggressive battery savers on laptops, and browser extensions that grab camera or microphone permissions to cause more trouble here than they do in the native app. If a call matters, the desktop app remains the more predictable option.

This is the second notable calling-side expansion from WhatsApp this month, after it rebuilt its Android Auto and CarPlay experience in July.
