The Redmi Note 17 series has leaked in detail, and the headline surprise is the name itself: Xiaomi is reportedly skipping the Redmi Note 16 generation entirely and jumping straight from the Note 15 to the Note 17. The new leak, published by GizChina Greece on July 6 with images of the phones, describes a four-model lineup — Redmi Note 17R, Note 17, Note 17 Pro and Note 17 Pro Max — expected to debut in China later this month. To be clear up front: none of this is official yet, so treat every detail below as a rumor.
Why is there no Redmi Note 16?
Xiaomi has pulled this move before. Its flagship line jumped from the Xiaomi 15 straight to the Xiaomi 17 series to bring its numbering in line with the competition, and the Redmi Note family now appears to be following the same logic. For buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: if you were waiting for a “Note 16”, it is not coming — the Note 17 series is the direct successor to the Redmi Note 15 phones sold in India today.
A new design, and a bigger Pro Max

The leaked images show the biggest visual change in years for the series. The centrally placed square camera island of the Note 15 family is gone, replaced by a compact rectangular module tucked into the top-left corner, paired with flat displays and flat frames across the range. All three main models are said to use a 6.83-inch flat OLED panel with 1.5K resolution, stereo speakers and some level of water resistance.
Redmi Note 17 series leaked specifications
Here is how the lineup reportedly splits, based on the July 6 leak. Note that some details have shifted between reports — an earlier leak pinned the 200MP camera and Dimensity chip on the “Pro”, which the newer report now attributes to the Pro Max — so expect refinements before launch.
Redmi Note 17:
- Display: 6.83-inch flat OLED, 1.5K resolution
- Chipset: Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 (one report says Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 — unsettled)
- Camera: 50MP main
- Charging: 67W wired
- Software: HyperOS 3.1 on the China units
Redmi Note 17 Pro:
- Display: 6.83-inch flat OLED, 1.5K resolution
- Chipset: Snapdragon 6 Gen 5
- Battery: 9,000mAh
- Camera: dual rear, 50MP main
Redmi Note 17 Pro Max:
- Display: 6.83-inch flat OLED, 1.5K resolution
- Chipset: MediaTek Dimensity 7500
- Battery: 10,100mAh
- Camera: 200MP main
Nothing concrete has leaked about the Redmi Note 17R yet, though one report suggests it could be a rebadged Redmi 17 5G aimed at global markets.
When will it launch in India?
The series is expected to be announced in China in July, with the Pro Max possibly following in August. There is no India date yet. Going by Xiaomi’s usual playbook, the Indian models will arrive a few months after China, likely with tweaked cameras and charging speeds — the specs above describe the Chinese units, and global versions of Redmi Note phones regularly differ. We will track certification sightings (BIS listings are usually the first India signal) and update when the launch turns official.
