CloudMagic is now Newton Mail, updated with optional premium features

Popular email app, CloudMagic has been renamed to Newton Mail. And it brings with it a slew of optional premium features.

Now, when you update the app you will be met with a screen which says start your 14-day free trial. This suggests that the app has gone premium, which is why you will see all the 1-star reviews on the Google Play Store.

In reality, the Play Store listing clearly reads:

Once the trial ends, you can subscribe to Newton for $49.99 per year or continue using the app without the premium features.

Most people don’t read the change-logs or the app’s description, so the splash screen which you get on opening the updated app is very confusing to the average user, and Newton has to take the blame for not making things clear.

With that out of the way, let’s what the new features are:

  • Read Receipts – These are similar to WhatsApp’s double checkmark, and Newton says so itself in the description

  • Snooze- Lets you snooze emails and read them later, similar to how Inbox by Gmail notifies you at a later time.
  • Send Later – This option allows you schedule emails to be sent at a particular time.
  • Undo Send – This is kind of similar to Gmail’s Undo Send, which pulls the email which you just sent. Useful in case you sent it to the wrong person, or if it has the annoying typo you just noticed after hitting send. It’s also available in Inbox by Gmail, for free.

  • Sender Profile – Kind of like the Truecaller of emails, this option gives you information about the email sender.
  • Connected Apps – Newton’s specialty in that it bundles in support for popular third party services like Evernote, Pocket, Todoist, OneNote, to name a few.

You can try all these features for free for 14 days, after which you can continue using Newton Mail for regular emails. Should you wish to go premium you will have to cough up $50 for a year’s subscription. That amounts to Rs 3,300 a year. This is double the price what CloudMagic’s last version asked for some premium features.

Newton Mail’s UI is still the same as CloudMagic’s interface.

We wish to remind our readers that there are a couple of privacy concerns in Newton (CloudMagic)

  1. Emails are stored on Newton Mail’s AWS servers (Amazon Web Services). If you delete your CloudMagic account, the company states it will delete all of your emails from it’s servers almost instantly. Read the privacy policy before you decide to use the app.
  2. A reddit user reports that the app now sends a tracking beacon to every email you send, with a unique id. This happens regardless of whether you asked for a Read Receipt or not.

This is what the privacy policy mentions about the tracking:

Read Receipts allows you to see the read/unread status of your sent e-mails without any notification to the recipient. We collect and track information about your sent email in order for you to use this feature.

Oh and there is a new icon for Newton Mail too.

Most email apps use an envelope like icon, but CloudMagic’s Newton’s new icon resembles a paper rocket which is very similar to Telegram. But it’s kind of stlyish than the IM app’s icon.
