TCL Sues Samsung, Says Its Mini LED TVs Aren’t Mini LED

TCL has sued Samsung in Los Angeles federal court, alleging that a line of Samsung televisions sold as “Mini LED” sets is nothing of the kind. The suit was filed on Monday and targets Samsung’s M Model televisions, which went on sale in March. Samsung denies the claim and says it will fight the case.

What TCL alleges

Mini LED is a backlight technology that uses far smaller LEDs than a standard LED set, which allows finer control over brightness and contrast. TCL’s complaint says the M Model sets carry none of the engineering that defines Mini LED, and that they are rebuilt from Samsung’s ordinary LED televisions.

Price is central to the argument. TCL says Samsung launched the M Models at prices below TCL’s own cheapest Mini LED sets, then advertised them with the same label. The filing’s characterisation is blunt: a cut-price set pulled from an old product line, dressed up and sold as a premium Mini LED television at a tempting price. TCL also alleges the strategy worked, and that Samsung’s products took back market share TCL had won.

TCL attorney R.C. Harlan put the consumer harm at the centre of the case in a statement:

Samsung’s false advertising misled consumers who wanted the higher picture quality associated with Mini LED televisions into buying Samsung’s falsely labeled product, unfairly damaging TCL’s sales, goodwill, and valuable technology in the process.

TCL is asking the court for an order blocking Samsung’s Mini LED claims, plus an unspecified amount in damages.

Samsung’s response

Samsung said in a statement on Tuesday that it intends to vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit, and that it stands fully behind the quality and accuracy of its product descriptions. Nothing in the case has been tested in court, and a complaint is one company’s account of events.

Why this matters beyond televisions

This is a fight between two manufacturers over market share, and it should be read that way. TCL is not filing on behalf of shoppers. But the underlying issue is one that anyone buying consumer electronics runs into constantly, phones very much included.

Terms like Mini LED, AMOLED, “AI camera” and even RAM figures are marketing labels before they are technical specifications. These names are not tightly policed before a product reaches shelves, and the challenges that do land tend to come from a rival’s lawsuit years after the fact. The practical defence has not changed. Look at measured reviews and independent testing rather than the label on the box, whether you are buying a television or a handset.
