Smartphone Shipments Fell 20% in Q3 2026, Counterpoint Says

Global smartphone shipments fell 20% year on year in Q3 2026, according to preliminary estimates from Counterpoint Research. That is the lowest third-quarter level since 2012.

Counterpoint ties the slump to the ongoing memory shortage. It says phone makers passed higher component costs on to consumers. That pushed global smartphone retail prices up 20% so far in 2026.

Q3 was the second successive quarter to take the full brunt of the memory crisis.

What the Q3 smartphone slump means for buyers

The 20% figure is the rise in retail prices, not in average selling prices. Counterpoint says average selling prices climbed too, but it doesn’t give a percentage for them.

Buyers are reacting by keeping their phones. Jain says consumers are holding devices longer than the firm had estimated. More of them are also considering refurbished phones.

The squeeze isn’t even across the market. Counterpoint says premium demand has held up comparatively well, widening the gap with price-sensitive segments. Price hikes have also pushed some budget models out of key price bands. For budget buyers, that means fewer choices at the prices they normally shop.

Don’t expect quick relief. Counterpoint says a meaningful recovery in volumes is unlikely until component costs and supply conditions improve.

Brand shares: Samsung and Apple gain as volumes fall

Counterpoint’s share figures are preliminary and based on sell-in shipments. Here is how the top five compare with Q3 2025:

  • Samsung: 23% share, up from 19%; shipments down 3%
  • Apple: 22% share, up from 18%; shipments also lower
  • Xiaomi: 10% share, down from 14%; shipments down more than 30%
  • OPPO (including OnePlus and realme): 9% share, down from 12%; shipments down more than 20%
  • vivo: 8% share, down from 9%; shipments down more than 20%
  • Others: 27% share, down from 29%

Samsung kept the top spot and posted the largest share gain among major brands. Its shipments still fell, so the bigger slice comes from a smaller market. Counterpoint credits the Galaxy Z Fold8 with robust initial demand.

Apple’s share crossed 20% for the first time in any third quarter. Counterpoint says its volume dropped mainly because there was no base iPhone 18. That meant less launch-month stock than the iPhone 17 lineup shipped a year earlier. The iPhone 18 Pro models launched more strongly than their predecessors, particularly in China and India.

Xiaomi cut back on lower price segments and non-core overseas markets. vivo is prioritizing its core India and China markets. Counterpoint’s release gives no India-specific shipment figure.

The quarterly numbers measure something different from Counterpoint’s August full-year outlook. That outlook forecast a 14.3% drop in 2026 shipments. Supply pressure is also showing up at individual brands, with Samsung reportedly cutting Q4 phone production.
