Google Play Settlement Credits Start Arriving for Californians

Google has started paying out a $5 million class-action settlement over its auto-renewing Play Store subscriptions. Eligible customers are getting the money as a one-time Google Play Store credit. No opt-in was required. If you qualify, the credit should simply appear. The only thing to do right now is check your email and your Play Store balance.

Who Qualifies for the Google Play Settlement Credit

This is a California case, and that matters more than any other detail here. The class covers California residents who paid for at least one renewal term of a Google subscription sold through the Play Store. The qualifying window runs from May 30, 2014 to October 27, 2019. If you live outside California, this settlement does not pay you anything. The California Attorney General’s own release on the case describes it in the same California-only terms.

Other coverage of the settlement also describes several exclusions from the class. People who canceled during a free trial are out. So are Google Drive subscribers, and anyone Google had already refunded in full.

How Much the Payout Is Worth

At the time the settlement was approved, each class member was estimated to receive roughly $5.85 in Play Store credit. Android Police writer Timi Cantisano reported receiving $5.53 himself, which gives a rough sense of the scale.

The credit route only applies if you still have an active Play Store account. Anyone who no longer does gets paid through PayPal or Zelle instead. Money that nobody claims does not go back to Google. Under the settlement terms, it is routed to the California State Bar’s Justice Gap Fund as a cy pres award.

What the Lawsuit Alleged

The underlying complaint targeted California’s Automatic Renewal Law. That law sets rules on how a company must spell out the terms of a subscription that bills you again on its own. The suit accused Google of “failing to disclose the full terms of its automatically renewing Google Play Store subscriptions.”

The procedural timeline is already behind us. A court granted preliminary approval in January 2026. The deadline to opt out passed on May 9, 2026, and the final approval hearing was held on July 23, 2026. Credits landing now are the end of that process, not the start of it.
