A growing number of Google Pixel owners are finding themselves locked out of their devices following the September 2026 update. The glitch prevents the lock screen from accepting valid patterns and PINs. That leaves some users unable to access their phones without performing a complete factory reset.
The issue appears shortly after installing the recent September Pixel Drop. Impacted owners report that the lock screen no longer registers their usual unlock credentials. When drawing a pattern, the drawn line abruptly vanishes after touching the second dot. This breaks the pattern gesture and prevents the phone from unlocking.
PIN entries and troubleshooting failures
A similar defect affects PIN authentication. In one documented instance on a Pixel 8a, the lock screen registered an entry after only a single digit was pressed. It then displayed an incorrect PIN error message. While that user eventually regained access after waiting out a lockout timer, others have not been as fortunate.
Standard recovery steps have failed to bypass the problem. Users report that rebooting into safe mode, cleaning the display glass, and even plugging in a USB mouse via an adapter yield no results. For multiple Pixel owners on Reddit, the only working remedy was performing a factory reset from recovery mode. That action wipes all data stored locally on the device.
What Pixel owners should do
The bug does not appear to hit every updated Pixel device. Older models like the Pixel 6a have processed the update without lock screen problems. Google representatives have started reaching out to impacted users in community threads to gather diagnostic logs. However, the company has not yet released an official statement or emergency patch.
Having a standard monthly software patch lock people out of their phones is a serious defect for a premium lineup. If you have not yet installed the September 2026 update, back up your photos and device data to Google One immediately. If your phone relies on pattern unlock, switch to a password. Delaying the installation until Google pushes a fix is your safest move.
