Google Reportedly Plans to End Pixel Production in China by 2027

The Pixel in your pocket next year may not be built where the one in your pocket today was. Google has told its suppliers that it intends to have every Pixel phone, watch and pair of earbuds manufactured outside China from 2027, according to an exclusive report by Nikkei Asia. Google has not commented publicly, so treat this as a report rather than an announcement.

What Nikkei Asia actually reported about Pixel production

The report, bylined Lauly Li and filed from Taipei on 18 August, states that Google “has told suppliers it plans to have all of its Pixel smartphones, watches and wireless earbuds produced outside of China starting next year amid ongoing Washington-Beijing tensions.” Nikkei’s own subheading names Vietnam and India as the destinations. What it does not do — and what we are not going to invent — is say which product lines go to which country, or in what proportion. Anyone publishing a neat split between the two is guessing.

Most of the detail sits behind Nikkei’s paywall. Engadget, quoting that reporting, adds that Nikkei said in January that Google would develop and build the Pixel 11 in Vietnam, and that pulling that off — building a phone line from scratch, including testing equipment, tooling and process validation — is what convinced Google it could move the simpler watch and earbud lines too. A source told Nikkei that leaving China is easier for Google than for Apple, because Google does not officially sell Pixels in China, its userbase there is small, and it can plug into the supply chain Samsung has already built in Vietnam.

Why a Pixel buyer should care where it is assembled

This is not just a logistics story. Where a phone is finally assembled determines which tariff schedule it clears on the way to a buyer, and US-China trade friction is named in the first sentence of Nikkei’s report as the reason Google is moving at all. A Pixel that ships from Vietnam or India rather than China is a Pixel with a different landed cost in the United States — and in a year when component prices are already climbing, that matters to the sticker.

The India half is the more interesting one for anyone buying a Pixel in that market. Google already assembles some Pixels there; a full production shift makes local supply less dependent on an import lane that governments on both ends keep adjusting. It does not automatically mean cheaper phones — assembly is a small slice of a handset’s cost — but it removes one of the reasons Pixel availability in India has historically lagged.

The numbers Google gave suppliers

  • Shipment target: Google has reportedly told suppliers it plans to raise Pixel phone shipments 8 to 10 percent this year, from 12 million units in 2025.
  • Memory costs: to blunt rising memory prices, Google has been bundling phone memory-chip orders with chip orders for its cloud business.
  • Where things stand now: a significant share of Pixel hardware is still made in China, which is what makes a clean 2027 cutoff ambitious rather than routine.

Twelve million units a year is a rounding error next to Samsung or Apple, and that is precisely why Google can do this quickly. The memory-order bundling is the detail worth watching, though — it is the clearest sign yet that the component squeeze we covered when Washington moved against Apple’s use of Chinese memory chips is now shaping how Google buys parts, not just where it builds.

None of this is confirmed by Google, and manufacturing plans slip. But the direction has been consistent since Nikkei’s January report, and 2027 is close enough that the Pixels Google launches that year would be the first built entirely outside China.
