Google appears to be building a Phone to Watch Unlock feature for Pixel Watch, running today’s Watch Unlock in the opposite direction. Instead of using your watch to skip the lock screen on your phone, unlocking your phone would automatically unlock the paired watch. The evidence comes from unreleased code inside Google’s Connected Phone & Watch services app, found in an APK teardown by Android Authority — Google has not announced anything, and code found this way does not always ship.

How Phone to Watch Unlock would work
The strings describe a setup flow that asks whether you want your watch unlocked automatically, and explains the payoff in plain terms: skip entering a PIN or pattern on the watch, and just unlock your phone instead. Enabling it requires a one-time authentication step where you confirm the watch’s existing PIN or pattern, which establishes the trusted pairing rather than simply switching the watch’s protection off.
There is a second detail in the code worth flagging, because it addresses a real annoyance: the trusted relationship looks designed to transfer between Pixel Watches, so replacing or upgrading your watch would not mean setting the whole arrangement up again from scratch.
The feature also looks Pixel-exclusive rather than a generic Wear OS component — it lives in a Pixel-specific services app, not in the Wear OS platform layer. That would put it alongside the growing list of Pixel Watch capabilities that a Galaxy Watch or a OnePlus Watch running the same Wear OS release does not get.
Convenience now, one fewer lock later
This is genuinely useful if you wear a watch daily. Typing a PIN on a 41mm screen with one hand is the kind of small friction that makes people turn the watch’s lock screen off entirely, which is worse than any of the options here.
It is still worth being clear about what the feature trades away. Right now a Pixel Watch authenticates on its own terms — a stolen watch is a locked device even if the thief also has your unlocked phone. Chain the two together and your phone’s unlock becomes the single credential protecting both, and the watch stops being an independent security boundary.
That matters more than it sounds, because a watch holds contactless payment credentials, health data and message content, and it comes off your wrist far more casually than a phone leaves your pocket.
The right answer is to ship this as an option that is off by default, with a clear explanation of what it does, rather than as a setup-flow suggestion that most people accept without reading. Nothing in the code found so far says which way Google will go, and Google has not committed to shipping the feature at all.
