Pixel Camera: How to Turn Off Best Take, Top Shot and Auto Edit

Want your Pixel to save the photo you framed, instead of a composite it assembled for you? Three settings in the Pixel Camera app decide that. Auto Best Take and Top Shot work together on group shots. Magic Capture’s Auto Edit, on the Pixel 11 series, edits pictures without being asked.

Why You Might Want the Pixel Camera’s AI Features Off

Each of these features works by deciding what your photo should have looked like. Auto Best Take combines several shots into one group photo the software considers ideal. Top Shot is the feature it depends on, and it has to be enabled for Auto Best Take to run. Auto Edit, which Google describes as automatically improving your best moments, revises pictures on your behalf.

Often that is genuinely useful. The catch is that the saved file stops being a single moment you actually witnessed. If you want a record rather than a composite, these are the switches that matter. Pixel owners on Reddit have also posted about strange AI results from the Pixel Camera and Google Photos. Those reports were not tied to any of the three settings below.

The Master Switch: Turn Off Top Shot

Start here if you want the simplest fix. Top Shot has to be on for Auto Best Take to function. Switching Top Shot off therefore disables both at once.

  1. Open the Pixel Camera app
  2. Tap Settings in the bottom-left corner
  3. Find Top Shot on the pop-up menu
  4. Tap the circle-with-slash icon beside it to turn it off

This is the blunt option. It takes Auto Best Take down as a side effect, which is exactly why some people choose it.

Keep Top Shot, Turn Off Auto Best Take Only

Some people want Top Shot without an automatically merged group photo. That combination is available. The setting is called Auto Best Take on the Pixel 10 and newer, and simply Best Take on the Pixel 9.

  1. Open the Pixel Camera app
  2. Tap Settings in the bottom-left corner
  3. Tap the 3-dot button
  4. Scroll to the Photos section
  5. Toggle Auto Best Take off

Top Shot carries on working after this. The camera simply stops combining several shots into one group photo on its own.

Pixel 11 Only: Turn Off Magic Capture’s Auto Edit

The Pixel 11 series adds a separate layer on top. Auto Edit sits inside Magic Capture, and it applies edits without a prompt. That makes it worth checking even if you keep the other two switched on.

  1. Open the Pixel Camera app
  2. Tap Settings in the bottom-left corner
  3. Tap the 3-dot button
  4. Scroll to the Magic Capture section
  5. Toggle Auto Edit off

What These Toggles Do Not Cover

All three settings live inside the Pixel Camera app. Google Photos has its own AI tools, and none of these toggles touches them. Full manual control means going through Photos as a separate exercise.

Menu wording also moves around between Pixel generations and Camera app releases. If a label is not where these steps say, search for the same name rather than the same position. Google’s recent Android 17 QPR2 beta builds have included camera fixes, which is a reminder that this app changes often. The paths above follow Droid-Life’s October 9 walkthrough, so check your own app if something sits elsewhere.
