Will Apple’s first foldable run hot once it is folded shut? Apple’s engineers say the iPhone Duo should cope. As of October 13, no independent test results have been published.
Their answer runs partly through the hinge. According to PCMag, which interviewed two Apple engineers, Apple routed a flexible graphite pipe through the iPhone Duo’s hinge. The pipe moves heat between the two halves, giving the phone more surface area to shed it.

Apple’s product page lists pre-orders from 5 a.m. PT on October 16, with availability starting October 23. Carrier offers are already appearing, such as AT&T’s bill-credit deal on the iPhone Duo.
Why Folding Makes Heat Harder
A foldable is thicker when closed than a regular phone. PCMag says that extra thickness makes heat harder to manage.
PCMag spoke with two people on Apple’s team. Dan Murray is Apple’s vice president of silicon engineering. Banafsheh Barabadi is senior manager of thermal product design.
“This was one of the most technically challenging aspects of our design,” Barabadi told PCMag.
Besides the hinge pipe, PCMag reports a second change. The Duo uses its own vapor chamber, thinner than the one in the iPhone 18 Pro. PCMag says this chamber is positioned in the middle of the phone’s body.
What Apple’s iPhone Duo Page Actually Says
Apple’s official Duo page is more general. As of October 13, it credits a vapor chamber with cooling the A20 Pro chip. It does not mention a graphite pipe.
The page also says the hinge is built to feel evenly weighted as it opens and closes, and to hold up over time. That is a design goal stated by Apple, not test data.
What Is Still Untested
According to PCMag, Apple’s engineers expect the Duo to handle heat without problems. That is Apple’s expectation, relayed by one outlet. PCMag itself has not yet tested the A20 Pro in the Duo and plans to in the coming weeks.
The pipe detail comes from a single interview, not from Apple’s spec page. A component that flexes every time you open the phone also raises a fair durability question. As of October 13, no independent durability testing has been published.
If you plan to game or record long videos on the Duo, sustained-load tests after the October 23 release are worth waiting for. Until then, the claim that it will stay cool is Apple’s word, not a measured result.
