Apple released iOS 27.0.1 on Monday, September 28, 2026. The update fixes the bug that made iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max units restart unexpectedly when Face ID failed to authenticate. That is the reboot behaviour androidpure covered as breaking news on September 20 and 21.
We reported on September 24 that Apple had told 9to5Mac a software fix was due early the following week. iOS 27.0.1 is that update, and it arrived on schedule. It is also the first point release since iOS 27 shipped on September 14.
What iOS 27.0.1 fixes
Apple lists three fixes in the release notes for the update, as published by MacRumors:
This update provides bug fixes for your iPhone, including fixes for the following issues:
- iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate
- A color artifact may appear on photos captured at 2x under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48 on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices
- Opening Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously may cause the touchscreen to become unresponsive
The second item covers a camera problem rather than a crash. Some iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units produced a colour artifact on 2x photos shot at f/1.48 in certain lighting. The third is an interface bug, and the notes do not tie it to specific models.
How to install it
The update is delivered over the air through Settings, then General, then Software Update. It is available to every iPhone already running iOS 27, not just the two Pro models named in the notes.
Apple shipped companion builds the same day. iPadOS 27.0.1 and visionOS 27.0.1 are out. Devices still on the older track get iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 instead.
Why this one mattered
A phone that reboots on a failed face scan is not a cosmetic defect. It interrupts whatever the owner was doing. The failure also sits on the authentication path most iPhone users rely on all day.
Apple acknowledged the bug publicly and then fixed it within weeks of launch. That is the outcome buyers should expect at this price tier.
Worth keeping separate: the screen protector issue we covered earlier in September is a different problem. That one involves third-party protectors interfering with the infrared camera. It is not among the fixes Apple lists here.
