Google Translate appears to be working on a mode that tidies up your speech before it translates it. Code for a feature called “Smart assist” was found inside Google Translate for Android, version 10.39.34.995726622.4-release, by Android Authority. It would give you a choice between a literal word-for-word translation and a cleaned-up one. The clean version strips out filler words and rough phrasing first.

What Smart Assist Would Do
Spoken translation has an old, unglamorous problem. People do not talk in clean sentences. The ums, the restarts, and the half-finished clauses all get fed into the translation engine as if they were meaningful. The result reads badly in the target language, even when the engine itself did nothing wrong.
Smart assist is Google’s answer to that. It would clean up your voice input before translation happens, so the other person reads a tidy sentence instead of a verbatim mess. Per the code, the option looks tied to Conversation mode only. Listening-only and Text-only modes would not get it.
The Rambler Question
This is not Google’s first run at the idea. Rambler, which does much the same filler-word cleanup inside Gboard, shipped earlier this year. The catch with Rambler is that it only works on Pixel 11 devices.
Android Authority raises the obvious follow-up, and it is the detail that decides whether this matters to most people. Nobody knows yet whether Smart assist in Translate would carry the same Pixel 11 restriction. A Pixel-only voice cleanup in a translation app used worldwide would be a much smaller story than a feature that works on any Android phone. It is also unclear whether it would function offline.
The usual caveat applies with some force here. This is unreleased code pulled from an APK teardown, with nothing visible in the public app. Android Authority notes that features found this way sometimes never ship at all. As of October 10, Google has made no announcement about Smart assist. If it does land, it joins a growing set of on-the-fly translation tools from Google, including the Live Translate work on Pixel Buds Pro 2.
