Google Play Services v26.34 Mentions an Unannounced Googlebook Again

Google Play services v26.34 and Google Play Store v53.0 started rolling out on August 31, closing out the month’s Google system updates. The most interesting line in the changelog is not a feature at all. It is a device name. Google’s own release notes again refer to a “Googlebook,” a laptop the company has never announced.

Google Play services v26.34 mentions the Googlebook

Under Device Connectivity, the release notes read: “[PC, Phone] You can now view and manage your phone notifications on your Googlebook or tablet.” That is the whole entry. There is no explanation of what a Googlebook is or when one might go on sale.

It is also not the first mention. As Droid Life points out, the August 24 changelog for Play services v26.33 carried a similar line about accessing your phone’s apps from a Googlebook. Two references in shipping release notes, a week apart, is the kind of detail that usually precedes a launch rather than follows a rumor.

For now, treat it as exactly what it is. Google is building phone-to-laptop features and has a name for the hardware internally. Nothing about pricing, timing or availability has been announced, and none of these features do anything on a device you cannot buy.

What actually changes on your phone

Plenty of the update is usable today. The Device Connectivity section adds laptop access to your phone’s files, alongside a straightforward improvement to eSIM transfers between devices — useful if you have ever moved a carrier profile to a new phone and watched it fail halfway.

Google Wallet gets two changes. Pix payments, which matter mostly in Brazil, now let you edit the amount through QR codes. Wallet also adds an events card section for accessing tickets and passes.

Account management is the notable one for families. Parents and teens can more easily set up Play account supervision and complete required age attestation, across phones, TVs and Wear devices. Age attestation is spreading across app stores under regulatory pressure in several markets, and it usually means handing over more identity information, not less. Easier setup is welcome, but it is worth knowing what the flow is asking you to verify before you tap through it.

The rest is thinner. There is an “AI led journey for Android device onboarding,” which Google does not explain, plus the usual system management bug fixes and stability work.

Google Play Store v53.0

The Play Store update is almost entirely about discovery, which is another way of saying it is about surfacing more things to buy:

  • Where to Watch — subscription and monetization options now appear directly inside the experience
  • Search — books and comics can be discovered straight from search results
  • Photo search — the Play Store can find apps and games related to the content in a photo
  • Creator Edit cluster — a section for finding what Google calls trusted Creators

How to check your version

Play services updates arrive silently in the background over several weeks, so there is no point waiting for a notification. To check the Play Store side, open Google Play, tap your profile picture, then Settings, then About, then Update Play Store. You are looking for v53.0.

For Play services, open Settings, then Apps, then see all apps, and find Google Play services. The version number is at the bottom of its App info page. If it still reads v26.33, the rollout simply has not reached your device yet.
