Google AI Mode Now Tracks Flight Prices and Books Hotels for You

Google AI Mode has picked up three travel features that move it from answering questions to handling the transaction: flight price tracking, flight and hotel pricing shown in points or miles, and — in the United States only for now — hotel booking that completes inside the chat with Google Pay. Google announced all three on 27 August.

The three land at very different stages of rollout, and the gap between them matters more than the headline suggests. Price tracking is the widest, points pricing is global, and the piece that actually takes your money is the narrowest.

What Google AI Mode does with flights now

Describe a trip and AI Mode pulls live fares from what Google calls more than 300 partner airlines and travel sites. If you are not ready to commit, you can follow up with something like “track these flight prices for me,” confirm the route, dates and filters, and Google emails you when the fare moves. This is Google Flights’ existing price-alert feature, relocated so you do not have to leave the conversation to set it.

Booking a flight still happens elsewhere. You build the itinerary in AI Mode, then buy the ticket on the airline’s site or your usual booking platform. Flight price tracking is live in more than 180 countries and territories — with one exclusion worth knowing about, below.

Points and miles pricing is the genuinely global piece

AI Mode can now quote flights and hotels in rewards currency rather than cash. Google’s own example is asking for Atlanta-to-Miami options on American Airlines miles for specific dates, and getting back how many miles the matching flights cost. It launches with Alaska Airlines / Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, Choice Hotels International, Hilton and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, with Accor, Flying Blue, Hyatt, LATAM Airlines and Lufthansa Group promised in the coming weeks. Redemption itself still happens on the partner’s site.

This is the only one of the three Google describes as globally available, and it is the most immediately useful outside the US, since it turns a tedious multi-tab award search into one question.

Hotel booking is US-only, and Google is not the merchant

The headline feature is also the most restricted. In the US, in English, you can now describe a trip, get a visual shortlist of hotels with reviews, then ask AI Mode to complete the booking. A “Continue on Google” option appears next to integrated partners; you pick a room, review the cancellation policy and pay with Google Pay without leaving Search. Launch partners are Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

Read the line Google puts at the end of that section carefully, because it defines what you are actually buying:

“When you book hotels through AI Mode, the hotel or booking platform will act as the merchant of record and handle any customer service.” — Google

That is the whole consumer catch in one sentence. The convenience is Google’s; the liability is not. If the room is wrong, the rate does not match, or you need to fight a cancellation charge, your counterparty is Expedia or Marriott or Booking.com, and the fact that the reservation was made inside a Google chat window gives you no additional recourse. It also means the cancellation terms you skim in a chat bubble are the terms that bind you — worth reading at least as carefully as you would on the hotel’s own checkout page, not less carefully because the interface is friendlier.

The EEA exclusion Google puts in a footnote

Google’s announcement footnotes flight price tracking as available in supported AI Mode locations and languages “excluding EEA countries and territories,” and notes that some depicted features will not be available to users in the EEA. So the 180-plus-country figure does not include the European Economic Area for price tracking, and European readers should assume the same asymmetry applies to parts of the rest. Google does not explain why in the post, though AI features in Search have repeatedly arrived late in the EEA under the bloc’s digital rules.

Availability, at a glance

  • Flight price tracking: more than 180 countries and territories, EEA excluded per Google’s footnote
  • Points and miles pricing: global, in all supported AI Mode locations and languages, with five partners at launch and five more in the coming weeks
  • Hotel booking: United States, English only, rolling out now, ten launch partners over the coming weeks

None of this requires a new app — it runs inside AI Mode in Search, alongside the other Google assistant features rolling out this month. If you are outside the US, the practical takeaway is that you get the research half now and the booking half whenever Google decides your market is next.
