Google is folding Spark, its personal AI agent, into the main Gemini app on Android. A new Chat and Task switch now sits above the prompt box, and Spark is leaving the navigation drawer. Spark still needs a paid AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, so free Gemini users don’t get it.
9to5Google spotted the change on October 12 and describes it as a server-side rollout, reaching Android first. The outlet says it isn’t seeing the redesign on iOS yet. As of our October 13 check, the newest entry in Google’s Gemini release notes is dated September 30 and doesn’t mention it.

What changes in the Gemini app
The practical change is where you find agent tasks. According to 9to5Google, Google describes Task mode as a “new home for Spark: Start new tasks anytime and keep track of them in your chats.”
- Chat and Task buttons: a mode switch above the prompt box
- One history: the chat list is no longer called Recents and now mixes chats with Spark tasks
- Filters: sort that list by All, Ready, Needs attention or In progress
- Scheduled page: Spark tasks and scheduled actions, grouped as Active, Paused, Completed and Suggested
- Settings: the Gemini Spark Settings entry in the account menu is now called Task settings
Why the Gemini Spark name is going quiet
Google announced Spark at I/O 2026 in May. Five months later, 9to5Google reads the redesign as Google deemphasizing the Spark branding. A separate destination in the drawer becomes one more button in the main chat.
The merge is pitched as a simpler layout, and a tidier menu is welcome. It doesn’t change who can use the feature, though. The Task side still unlocks only with AI Pro or AI Ultra. That fits a recent pattern, like the Gems replacement that launched Pro-only.
The lack of a release-notes entry also leaves gaps. Rollout pace and iOS timing are unknown for now.
When you’ll see it
Because the change is server-side, it reaches accounts gradually. If you pay for AI Pro or AI Ultra and use Gemini on Android, watch for the Chat and Task switch above the prompt box. Free users can check what their plan still includes in our look at Gemini’s free tier changes.
