Garmin Fenix 8: Screen Can Stay Stuck at Full Brightness, Fix Pending

Garmin has confirmed a new bug on the Garmin Fenix 8 AMOLED models. The screen can stay stuck at full brightness after the watch leaves bright ambient light, instead of dimming back down. A Garmin forum representative acknowledged the issue on October 7, 2026, and said a fix is pending in a future software update. No version number or release window came with that acknowledgment.

What goes wrong on the Fenix 8

The reported trigger is straightforward. Step outside into sunlight, then move indoors, and the display keeps burning at the brightness level it chose for daylight. It should drop back automatically and does not.

Owners seeing it have Always On Display switched on and the wrist gesture switched off. That combination means the panel is lit continuously, so a stuck-high brightness level eats battery for as long as it lasts. The result is faster battery drain.

Reports started on firmware 23.31. They have continued on 23.39, a build that was supposed to clear up earlier problems. Two firmware versions in, the behaviour is still there.

What Garmin has actually said

The acknowledgment came from forum representative Garmin – LF in the Fenix 8 series thread tracking the issue:

Update October 7, 2026: Our engineers are aware of a concern that may cause the brightness to stay fully lit, after being in bright ambient conditions. There is fic for this Pending. And will be released with the next software update. We do not yet have a time frame for this release. But I will post here again, when there are additional details.

In the same post, Garmin tells affected owners to keep using a manual workaround. Tapping the touchscreen or pressing a button forces the display back to its correct brightness, temporarily.

A workaround is not a fix date

Read that carefully and what owners have is an admission plus a tap-the-screen habit. A pending fix is not a commitment. There is no version number attached and no timeframe, so nobody can plan around it.

That matters more than usual here. This is the second brightness-related complaint running on the Fenix 8 this year. The other is the longer-standing argument about adaptive brightness being too dim and not switchable off. Those are two different problems on the same screen. A display that behaves predictably is not a nice-to-have on a watch like this.

If you own a Fenix 8 AMOLED and use Always On Display, watch your battery figures after time outdoors. Garmin says it will update the same thread when it has more detail. Buyers weighing newer hardware can compare against the Garmin fenix 9 and fenix 9 Pro.
