Apple Music Will Label AI Songs, but Record Companies Decide Which Ones

Apple Music will start showing visible “Made With AI” labels on tracks later this year, according to an email the service sent to music industry partners on Thursday, 20 August, obtained by Billboard. The labels will appear on songs that content providers — record labels and distributors — have tagged as “materially generated using AI”. Apple Music runs on Android as well as iOS, so the labels will show up for Play Store users of the app too.

Apple built AI detection. It is not the thing triggering the label

This is the detail that decides how much the labels are worth, and it is not new information — it has just never been this consequential. Speaking to Billboard’s On the Record podcast in April, Apple Music executive Oliver Schusser said the company had quietly built its own detection system: “We have developed — and we’ve never talked about this — but we’ve developed technology in-house that would allow us to exactly see what music people are delivering us, what AI [model] it is and all that.”

Apple is not using that system as the trigger. The label fires when a label or distributor voluntarily attaches an AI Transparency Tag on upload. Asked by Billboard why he relied on self-disclosure rather than the in-house detector, Schusser answered: “Well, first of all, you should know that every label in the world is delivering AI, [even if] they might not know about it. They themselves also need to develop tools to understand [the scope of AI use].”

Read plainly, that is an argument for why detection is needed, offered as a reason not to use it. The party with the commercial incentive to under-tag is the party doing the tagging, and Apple has said it holds a tool capable of checking the answer. A listener looking at an unlabelled track will not be able to tell whether it is human-made or simply undeclared.

What the system actually covers

The visible labels build on AI Transparency Tags, the system Apple announced in March, which until now has been visible only inside Apple’s content-delivery pipeline rather than to listeners. The tags cover material AI use across artwork, the recording itself, composition and music videos. Apple’s email, as quoted by Billboard, says content providers “are best positioned to know how their content was created, and the AI Transparency Tags that should be used”, and describes providers as “important partners” in the rollout.

  • What gets labelled: tracks tagged by the content provider as materially generated using AI
  • Where the tags apply: artwork, track, composition and music video
  • Who decides: record labels and distributors, self-reported at delivery
  • When: “later this year” — Apple has given no specific date
  • Platforms: the Apple Music service, which includes the Android app

The scale problem is bigger than the listening problem

Schusser’s April numbers are the most useful context anyone has published on this. More than a third of what Apple Music receives each month, he said, is “100% AI” music. Actual plays of it, he said, are “below 0.5% of usage”.

Those two figures describe a catalogue being flooded far faster than anyone is listening to the flood — which is precisely why a label matters to a listener who wants to know what they are putting on. It may also be why Apple would rather put the disclosure burden on suppliers than run detection across that volume itself, though Apple has not said so.

Apple is not moving alone here. A coalition of recorded-music industry stakeholders proposed a labelling scheme weeks ago that distinguishes “AI-generated” from “AI-assisted” tracks, and Tidal and Deezer have already been experimenting with labels of their own. Apple’s version collapses that distinction into a single Made With AI badge, which is simpler to read and correspondingly less informative: it will not tell you whether a song was generated end-to-end from a prompt or merely used AI on one element.
