iFixit has given the iPhone Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10. That is the highest score it has given any foldable phone so far, ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold8’s 4/10. The catch is that the inner screen and hinge, the parts some early owners say are failing, remain the hardest and costliest to fix.

Why the iPhone Duo beats other foldables on repairability
Several design choices earned the extra point. The batteries use electrically released adhesive, which iFixit rates as the best battery removal it has seen in any foldable. The outer screen also came off intact. That matters because several internal repairs have to go through it.
The trim around the inner display came off in one piece. On the Galaxy Z Fold8, the equivalent trim crumbled. Apple also holds the outer display and back cover with clips and screws alongside adhesive. And it published the iPhone Duo repair manual at launch.
For comparison, MacRumors notes the Pixel 11 Pro Fold also scored 4/10. That leaves the iPhone Duo one point clear of its two main Android rivals.
Where it loses points
The inner display and hinge account for the biggest deduction. Replacing them takes a lot of work, and the price could put owners off the repair entirely. Out-of-warranty inner-display damage costs $999, as covered in our iPhone Duo repair costs breakdown. Servicing the nano-texture cover layer costs $49 without AppleCare+ and $19 with it.
iFixit needed five different screwdriver types for the job, and Apple still uses pentalobe screws. The score is also provisional, because replacement parts are not on sale yet. iFixit expects them to arrive through Apple’s Self Service Repair program soon.
A record score for foldables is still a middling 5/10. The part most likely to fail is also the most expensive one to replace. iFixit itself says it would still recommend a conventional phone to anyone who puts repairability first.
Where the iPhone Duo screens are breaking
iFixit also tried to explain the inner-screen failures owners have been posting. It built a 3D model of the hinge from teardown footage, patents and CT scans. It then compared that model with photos of the reported damage, and wrote in its teardown post:
“The breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support.”
That spot sits slightly below where the display cable passes through the hinge. In iFixit’s closing simulation, the center support bar fails to drop far enough. The folding screen then comes down on it, creating a small stress hotspot near the reported break location.

iFixit presents this as one possible answer, not a confirmed cause. It also notes the physical damage may be smaller than it looks. A fault in tiny electrical connections can take out a whole row or column of pixels. As of this writing, no Apple statement on the cause has surfaced in the sources we read. iFixit says Apple is offering replacement units for now.
Dust and the crease
iFixit coated the Duo in fluorescent powder and worked it open and closed. Most of the powder stopped at adhesive barriers, but enough reached the hinge to make it crunch. The Duo still collected less visible powder than the Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold in iFixit’s earlier tests.
iFixit stresses this is not an IP test. IP ratings cover the enclosure, which does not seem to include a foldable’s hinge mechanism. Cleaning or replacing the hinge parts means removing the flexible display and its supports. That fits with what the JerryRigEverything dust test showed.
The crease is another weak spot once the nano-texture cover comes off. iFixit says it is arguably even more visible than the Fold8’s, and the surface underneath scratches more easily. The matte cover scatters reflections, which helps hide the crease in daily use.
Other teardown notes
- Logic board: single-layer, not stacked. iFixit says almost every iPhone since the iPhone 8, except models like the XR and SE, used a double-layer board.
- Charging: the charging hardware sits on one side only, so one battery charges through the accordion flex cable.
- Cameras: 48MP f/1.6 main, 48MP f/2.2 ultrawide, 12MP f/2.2 outer-screen selfie, plus an under-display inner selfie camera.
