Android phone number verification is switched on by default, and it links your number to every Google Account signed in on your device. Google’s own Android Help page says this covers current accounts and numbers as well as any you add later. You can turn it off, but only from your phone’s settings.

Is your number linked to all your Google Accounts?
If you never changed this setting, it probably is. Google’s help page for the feature states the default plainly:
“On your device, phone number verification is turned on by default.”
— Google Android Help, Manage phone number verification on your device
With the setting on, Google verifies each phone number on the device. It then adds those numbers to all Google Accounts signed in on that phone. If you keep a personal account and a second account on one device, both get the same number.
The link also works in both directions. Sign in to a new Google Account later, and it picks up every number already on the device. Add a new phone number, and Google attaches it to every signed-in account.
What you agree to when verification is on
Google says that keeping verification on lets both Google and your carrier verify your phone numbers periodically. In other words, Google describes it as a recurring check rather than a one-time step at setup.
A related feature, Better sharing on Google, switches on at the same time. If several Google Accounts are signed in, Better sharing stays on for only one of them.
Why the default matters
Google isn’t hiding any of this. Its help page spells the behavior out. The issue is that the setting is opt-out, so the burden falls on you to find and change it.
Many users may never open this menu. A number you meant to tie to one account ends up linked to all of them. Google and your carrier can then keep re-checking it on a periodic basis.
We’ve walked through similar opt-outs before, such as turning off Pixel Camera’s Best Take, Top Shot and Auto Edit. This one takes about the same effort.
How to turn off phone number verification
Google says you can switch verification off at any time. Device settings are the only place to manage it. These are Google’s steps:
- Open your device’s Settings app.
- Select Google.
- Select All services.
- Under Privacy & security, select Phone number verification.
- Select whether to verify your phone number, and turn it off if you don’t want the link.
Android Authority reports that the switch on this screen is labelled Verify phone numbers automatically. That label doesn’t appear in Google’s help text, so yours may read differently.
Because Google manages this per device, repeat the steps on every Android phone where your accounts are signed in.
What about numbers that are already linked?
Here’s the honest caveat. Google’s steps cover the toggle only. As read on October 14, its help page doesn’t say what happens to numbers already attached to your accounts once you switch off.
Android Authority reports that you need to remove those numbers from each account’s Personal Info page. That step comes from Android Authority, not Google’s help text. Treat the toggle as the first step, and check each account if you want old links gone too.
