Googlebook Gets a Linux Terminal Preview, but No Desktop Apps Yet

Google has put a Linux terminal into preview on Googlebook. It lets developers and AI agents run commands inside a sandboxed Debian virtual machine. The catch is what’s still missing: Linux desktop apps, USB debugging and hardware acceleration are all listed as future work.

Google announced the Googlebook Linux terminal preview on the Android Developers Blog on October 12. The post was written by Cyrus Stoller, Group Product Manager for Laptops & Tablets. Last week we noted that Googlebooks can’t match Chromebook’s Linux support. Linux there was a command-line setup with no desktop integration. This preview closes part of that gap, not all of it.

This is a feature for developers and power users. If you don’t write code or run AI agents, nothing changes for you today.

What the Googlebook Linux terminal includes

Google says every terminal command runs inside an isolated Linux VM, not on Googlebook OS itself. The toolkit covers what most developers reach for first.

  • Core tools: apt, git and ssh
  • Languages: common compilers and runtimes, including Node.js, Python, Ruby, Go and Rust
  • Local testing: automatic localhost port forwarding to the host browser
  • Resources: adjustable memory for the VM
  • Recovery: a one-click VM reset that keeps your files on the host

The pitch: AI agents with administrator rights

The headline use case is agentic AI. Google says the design lets users grant sudo, or administrator, privileges to AI tools such as Antigravity and other agent platforms.

Google’s answer to the obvious risk is the VM boundary. Your folders stay invisible to the VM until you allow each one in.

The VM boundary helps protect the host OS and unmounted files; each directory made available to the Linux VM is only mounted after the user’s explicit permission.

— Cyrus Stoller, Google, Android Developers Blog

Those protections are Google’s own design claims, and we haven’t tested them. Note the wording, too: the boundary covers the host and unmounted files. Any folder you do mount sits inside the VM, within reach of an agent running with sudo. Share only what the agent actually needs.

What’s still on the roadmap

Google lists several features as future work. It gives no dates for any of them.

  • Linux GUI apps: with app-launcher integration
  • USB passthrough: including ADB over USB
  • Dynamic scaling: for VM memory and storage
  • Hardware acceleration: GPU and NPU support
  • VM persistence: a VM that lives on separately from the terminal window

The missing ADB over USB will matter most to Android developers who test on a physical phone. Until GUI apps arrive, Linux on Googlebook remains a terminal-only experience.

Which Googlebooks get it, and how to turn it on

Google’s post doesn’t say how to enable the preview. It also doesn’t list which Googlebook models or which countries get it. For models and pricing, see our Googlebook launch coverage.
