Galaxy Buds App Code Suggests Samsung May Flip Its Overheating Advice

A string buried in the Galaxy Buds companion app points to a change in Samsung’s overheating guidance. It tells you to put hot earbuds back into the charging case, which is the opposite of what Samsung’s live support page says.

Android Authority found the text in version 9.0.10.1724 of the Galaxy Buds app. It describes earbuds that shut themselves down, then asks you to re-case them:

“Your earbuds will be turned off for your safety. Put both earbuds in the case and wait. You can use your earbuds again when they cool down.”

That line comes from the shipped app binary, per the outlet’s teardown. It is work-in-progress code, and it may never appear in front of a user.

What Samsung’s Galaxy Buds overheating advice says today

Samsung’s US support page for earbud overheating gives the opposite instruction. It says the earbuds beep continuously as a safety alert that they need to cool down. It tells you to take them out of your ears immediately. Then it says not to put them in the charging case, and not to use them again, until they have cooled completely.

That wording has been in place since at least late 2024, according to Android Authority.

Two changes in one string

The code hints at a second shift as well. Right now an overheating pair beeps while continuing to run. The string describes earbuds that cut power on their own once they get too hot.

Android Authority’s theory is that newer Galaxy Buds hardware may be able to stop charging current during a thermal spike. If so, re-casing a hot pair would be safe rather than risky. The outlet also leaves room for the simpler explanation that the string is just a mistake.

Do not act on this yet

This is a code find, not a policy change. As of October 8, no official Samsung statement on new overheating guidance has surfaced. The teardown itself warns the string may not reach a public release.

So the published advice still stands. If your earbuds feel hot or start beeping, take them out of your ears. Leave them out of the charging case and wait until they are completely cool before using them again.

If Samsung does change the behavior, it needs to update the support page in the same breath. Two sets of conflicting official instructions on a thermal-safety question would be worse than either one on its own.
