Google has put an end date on ChromeOS. In a new help article for IT administrators, the company says ChromeOS devices will keep receiving regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. That single line matters for anyone buying a Chromebook right now. Google sells these machines on a 10-year update promise, and a Chromebook bought today can have an Auto Update Expiration date that runs past 2034. For those devices, part of the promised ChromeOS run now stops short.

Existing Chromebooks are not being cut off. Google says they keep receiving updates through their supported lifetime under the existing Auto Update policy, up to that mid-2034 horizon. The devices affected are the ones whose support window would otherwise have extended past it.
What happens to ChromeOS after 2034
Googlebook OS is Google’s new platform, combining ChromeOS with the Android tech stack. It runs Android apps natively alongside desktop web browsing. We covered the Googlebook launch separately.
Google says many of its newest Chromebooks will be eligible to move across to Googlebook OS. It has not named any of them. Google says the eligibility list and the migration routes are still to come.
That is the weak point for buyers. Google sold these machines on a decade of updates, and for some recent buyers the ChromeOS portion of that now ends early. The replacement path depends on a list Google says it will share later, so anyone shopping this week has nothing to check a shortlist against.
What changes for schools and businesses
The 2026 Googlebook launch is consumer-only for now. There is no domain enrollment and no central fleet management on the new platform. Google says the first wave of management capabilities starts rolling out in the second half of 2027.
Existing ChromeOS Enterprise and Education Upgrade licences stay active for existing devices. Nothing breaks immediately for an organisation already running a managed fleet. A hardware refresh is the harder call, because the management tooling on the new platform is still a 2027 item.
What to do now
If you own a Chromebook, nothing changes today. Updates continue as scheduled. If you are buying one, check the model’s Auto Update Expiration date before you pay. Anything dated past mid-2034 will not get its full ChromeOS run, and the migration route for it has not been spelled out yet.
