T-Mobile will charge $5 a month for iPhone Handoff, Apple’s new iOS 27 feature that lets one phone number run across two separate iPhones. The carrier confirmed the price in its own announcement of iPhone 18 Pro availability, making it the first carrier to put a number on a feature Apple hasn’t charged for itself.
What iPhone Handoff actually does
iPhone Handoff is an eSIM feature arriving with iOS 27. It lets the same phone number be active across two compatible iPhones, with calls, texts, data, mobile hotspot, Scam Shield, and T-Satellite working on both devices under an eligible plan. Only one iPhone carries the number at a time, and switching happens automatically when you unlock whichever device you’re holding.
Setup requires both iPhones on iOS 27 or later, connected to Wi-Fi, signed into the same Apple Account, with FaceTime, iMessage, and Messages in iCloud all turned on. Payment cards and car keys in Wallet carry over to both phones, but some items like transit passes, IDs, or corporate badges may only work on one device. The feature does not hand off an Apple Watch pairing between the two iPhones. Once turned on, it stays active until you contact your carrier to disable it.
The $5/month fee
T-Mobile is introducing the feature at $5 a month, per its own newsroom announcement covering iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo, and Apple Watch availability. That’s a recurring carrier fee sitting on top of whatever plan you’re already paying for, for a feature Apple built into the OS at no cost to itself.
At launch, only two carriers support iPhone Handoff at all: T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany. Deutsche Telekom isn’t charging a standalone fee, folding the feature into its existing MultiSIM add-on instead, which runs €6.95 a month but is free on some of its plans. Verizon and EE are expected to add support by the end of the year, and it’s an open question whether either follows T-Mobile’s flat per-month pricing or Deutsche Telekom’s bundled approach.
Worth the money?
iPhone Handoff solves a real problem, running one number across a personal and work iPhone, or a primary and backup device, without juggling call forwarding or a second SIM. But T-Mobile turning a software feature Apple isn’t charging for into a standing $5/month line item is worth noticing before you enable it. It’s not a one-time activation cost; it renews every month for as long as the feature stays on, and turning it off means calling your carrier rather than flipping a toggle in Settings.
