Google Health version 5.08, released September 11 on Android and iOS, closes the door on Fitbit account logins for good. If you still sign in to the app with old Fitbit credentials instead of a Google Account, you’ll now be locked out, and any data you never migrated over is being deleted.
What changed in Google Health 5.08
The update’s changelog, reproduced in full below, is unambiguous about what’s ending and why:
“A Google Account is now required to use the Google Health app as the Fitbit account migration period has ended. Please note that Fitbit account logins are no longer supported, and unmigrated data will be deleted.”
That’s the headline change. A second, separate note in the same changelog addresses a bug some users hit during the transition:
“We’ve also fixed a sign-up issue for users whose email addresses were previously associated with Fitbit. You can now use your preferred Google Account to sign in, regardless of whether that email was previously used with Fitbit.”
Google has been pushing Fitbit users toward Google Accounts for a while as part of folding Fitbit into its broader health platform, and this update marks the point where that migration window officially closes rather than just being encouraged.
What this means if you never migrated
If you’re one of the Fitbit holdouts who kept using your original Fitbit login, two things now apply. First, Google Health 5.08 won’t let you sign in with those credentials anymore, full stop. Second, and more serious, is the data. Google’s own wording is direct: whatever you hadn’t already moved to a Google Account is being deleted, not archived or held in limbo.
That’s a real cost for anyone who put off the migration, whether out of inertia or discomfort with tying years of fitness and health data to a Google Account rather than a standalone Fitbit one. Google’s changelog doesn’t spell out an exact deletion date or a way to recover data after the fact, and no support page currently carries additional detail beyond this in-app note, so anyone still on a Fitbit login should check their account status now rather than assume there’s more time.
How to check if you’re affected
- Open the Google Health app on Android or iOS and try signing in.
- If it asks for a Google Account instead of accepting Fitbit credentials, your migration is incomplete.
- Check your data in the app before assuming everything carried over automatically.
The Google Health app is available now on Google Play and the App Store.
