Samsung has pushed the One UI 9.0 beta to the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra in India, along with the Galaxy A36, Galaxy A56 and Galaxy S24 FE. For the S23 line specifically, this is the end of the road. Android 17 is the fourth and final major OS version those phones were ever promised.
The Galaxy S23 gets its last major Android version
Samsung’s own support documentation for the S23 series promises the series four years of One UI upgrades and five years of security updates. The S23 shipped in February 2023 running Android 13. Count four generations forward and you land on Android 14, 15, 16 and now Android 17. One UI 9.0 is the last one.
That is Samsung honouring exactly what it sold, not cutting anything short, and it is worth saying plainly. But it is also a useful contrast. The Galaxy S24 series, launched barely eleven months after the S23, was covered by Samsung’s shift in policy: its own newsroom says the S24 series offers seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. An S23 Ultra owner and an S24 Ultra owner bought flagships one generation apart and ended up with wildly different support horizons: four versions against seven.
S23 owners are not stranded after this. Security patches continue into the fifth year. But if you are on an S23 and were hoping for another Android version after this one, there isn’t one coming.
Which devices just got the One UI 9.0 beta
Samsung’s published beta roster, dated September 1, names the Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7, S25, S25+, S25 Ultra and S25 FE across select markets including India, Korea, the UK and the US. The devices below are not on that list, and have been added since:
- Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra — first beta build live in India
- Galaxy S24 FE — opened in South Korea first, now expanded to India. The India build is 3,454.95MB, firmware S721BXXUEZZHL
- Galaxy A36 — India only so far. First build is 2,376.19MB, firmware A366EXXUCZZHI
- Galaxy A56 — opened in South Korea
India is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in this round. Three of the four additions landed there first, which continues the pattern from the earlier expansion we covered when the Galaxy S24 series and A57 picked up the beta. What is actually in One UI 9.0
Samsung’s changelog for the S23 build lists a more customisable quick panel, changes to Samsung DeX and Samsung Notes, and new accessibility features. It is Android 17 underneath.
Temper expectations on how transformative that is. Reviewing the same release, GSMArena’s assessment was blunt: “Overall, One UI 9.0 doesn’t really bring anything seriously new to the table.” For an S23 owner, the more meaningful fact is not what the update adds but that it is the last one.
Standard beta caveats apply. This is pre-release firmware on a three-year-old phone, bugs and battery regressions are normal, and rolling back to stable is not always painless. If the S23 is your only phone, waiting for the stable release is the sensible call.
