Google Maps Now Shows Three Different Names for Lake Ontario

Open Google Maps and look at the same lake from three different countries and you will now get three different answers. Google has confirmed that the body of water most of the world knows as Lake Ontario is being relabelled “Lake America” for users in the United States, will keep the name “Lake Ontario” for users in Canada, and will appear with both names for everyone else — which, for readers in India, Europe and the rest of the world, means a label reading “Lake Ontario (Lake America)” on your own phone.

What Google actually said about the Lake America change in Google Maps

The change came in a short post on Google’s own blog dated 29 August. Google says the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the federal database it treats as the authoritative source for American place names, has formally changed the name, and that Maps follows suit as a matter of standing policy rather than as a one-off decision:

These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now.

— Google, in its Maps blog post of 29 August 2026

That policy is the same one Google invoked in February 2025 when Maps began showing “Gulf of America” in the US. According to 9to5Google, the underlying GNIS entry was updated on 27 August by the Department of the Interior, following an executive order; Google’s own post gives no date for the database change, so treat that specific date as secondary reporting rather than something Google or GNIS has stated on the record.

What it looks like on your phone

The split is geographic, not account-based, so what you see depends on where Maps thinks you are. 9to5Google reports that the behaviour can also be reproduced with a VPN, and Newsweek, checking from outside the US, saw the label rendered with “Lake Ontario” first and “Lake America” in brackets — matching what Google describes for the rest-of-world case.

A few adjacent details are worth flagging as observations by other outlets rather than confirmed Google policy. 9to5Google says Apple Maps had not adopted the new name at the time of its testing, though Apple followed Google on “Gulf of America” within a day or two in 2025, and that the review-posting limits Google imposed on the Gulf of America listing after a wave of backlash have not been applied to this one. MapQuest has publicly said it will not change the name and has put up a mock name generator in response. Canada, for its part, has said it is not renaming anything.

Why a map label is worth paying attention to

It is easy to file this under political noise, but there is a practical point underneath. Google is stating plainly that Maps labels are downstream of whichever government database covers the territory you are standing in — which means the name on your screen is a rendering of one country’s official record, not a neutral fact, and it can change when that record does. If you use Maps for anything where the name matters, from documents to search terms, it is worth knowing that the label is region-dependent by design. That same design is what lets Google avoid picking a side; it also means two people looking at the same lake in the same app are no longer looking at the same map.

It is a small change next to the bigger functional additions Maps has been shipping lately, such as the Ask Maps assistant with food ordering, but it is one that lands on every US user’s screen without them opting into anything.
