Pixel 11 Owners Report Static in Video Boost Clips, With a User-Found Fix

A group of Pixel 11 owners say videos they record with Video Boost switched on come back with bursts of static laid over the audio, and the fix that has worked so far is not a Google patch but a two-step reset a user worked out themselves: clear the Camera app’s cache and turn off Audio Zoom. The reports were picked up by Android Authority on 27 August, roughly a week after the Pixel 11 series went on sale.

What Pixel 11 owners are reporting

The account that started the thread came from someone who had just moved to a Pixel 11 Pro XL and filmed a house show to try out the camera. On playback, they found bursts of static repeating roughly every five seconds — and only on the clips where Video Boost had been enabled. Android Authority reports that several other Pixel 11 owners replied to say they were hearing the same thing.

The details differ from person to person, which is worth noting before anyone assumes their own phone is affected. Android Headlines reports the glitch being described at 4K HDR 60fps by some users and at 30fps by another, so there is no single recording mode that reliably reproduces it. Neither outlet gives a figure for how many devices are affected, and as of 30 August no acknowledgement from Google has surfaced in the coverage. Android Authority says it has asked Google for comment and had no response at the time of publication.

What you can do about it right now

The workaround comes from the original poster rather than from Google, so treat it as a user-found remedy rather than an official fix. It takes under a minute:

  1. Turn off Audio Zoom. In the Camera app’s video settings, turn off Audio Zoom — the feature that lifts the volume of whatever you have zoomed in on while pushing background noise down.
  2. Clear the Camera app’s cache. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Camera > Storage & cache > Clear cache. This does not delete any of your photos or videos; it only drops the app’s temporary files.
  3. Record a short test clip with Video Boost still on and play it back with headphones, which makes the static far easier to hear than the phone’s speaker does.

If the static is still there, the other option is simply to leave Video Boost off for anything where the sound matters more than the picture — a concert, an interview, a school performance. That is a real cost, not a neutral trade: Video Boost is one of the features Google leans on hardest to sell the Pixel camera.

Why Video Boost is a plausible suspect

Video Boost has been a Pixel headline feature since the Pixel 8 Pro in 2023. It is not purely on-device work — clips shot with it enabled are uploaded to Google’s servers, processed for colour, lighting, stabilisation and low-light detail, and sent back to the phone. That round trip is part of why a fault here is awkward for owners to diagnose on their own, and why a fix, if one is needed, is more likely to arrive through Google’s pipeline than through anything a user can toggle.

The Audio Zoom theory came from a commenter on the same thread, not from Google or from any teardown, so it remains a hypothesis that happens to have worked for at least one person. It is a reasonable one — Audio Zoom actively reshapes the recorded audio rather than passing it through — but it has not been confirmed by anyone with access to the code.

The wider Pixel 11 picture

Google announced the Pixel 11 series on 12 August and started shipping on 20 August, and this is not the first rough edge to surface in the fortnight since. Android Headlines notes reports of app crashes affecting Google Photos and Spotify, plus a Pixel 11 bug that renders most of Genshin Impact’s interface as a purple blob. None of those is fatal, but taken together they are the usual first-month tax on buying a phone in its launch window — something worth weighing if you are still deciding between ordering now and waiting for the first couple of maintenance updates.
