The claim comes from German outlet Macwelt, which says a source has told it that Apple is deliberately stepping around the usual Friday slot this year. It is a rumour, not an Apple announcement, and nothing about the pre-order timing has been confirmed by the company.
What the iPhone 18 Pro pre-order change actually means for buyers
Apple’s pattern for years has been predictable enough to plan around: announce on a Wednesday, open pre-orders at 5AM Pacific on the Friday of the same week. Apple has already confirmed the September 9 event, a Wednesday, so the default expectation was Friday, September 11.
Two things change if this report is right. The first is the day — Saturday, September 12. The second, and the one more likely to catch people out, is the hour. There is one checkable precedent that makes the theory more than speculation, and it is exclusive to Macworld‘s write-up: in 2015, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus were not available to pre-order until Saturday, September 12, for the same calendar reason. Apple has done this before under identical circumstances.
Which devices this covers, and which one waits longer
The reported Saturday timing is said to cover the iPhone 18 Pro alongside the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Note that the outlets differ slightly here: GSMArena’s retelling lists the Series 12 but not the Ultra 4.
The foldable iPhone Ultra is the outlier. Even though it is widely expected to be unveiled on the same stage on September 9, Macworld says reports claim its pre-orders might not open until late September. That matches multiple earlier reports suggesting the folding model ships on a later schedule than the Pro and Pro Max, so a buyer eyeing the foldable should not assume a September 12 alarm buys them anything at all.

Treat it as a single-source rumour with a plausible historical pattern behind it, not a schedule to book time off for. The underlying tipster is an unnamed “reliable source,” so there is no track record to weigh, and Apple typically publishes exact pre-order timing on its own site during or immediately after the keynote.
