Gemini Live Hits First-Gen Google Home Mini, but You Have to Pay

Gemini Live has reached the first-generation Google Home Mini and the original Nest Hub — hardware Google first sold in 2017 and 2018 respectively — as part of the July update to Google Home. There is a condition attached, and it is the interesting part: Google’s own changelog says the feature is for Google Home Premium subscribers.

Gemini Live on first-gen speakers, if you subscribe

Google’s wording is short and specific. Home Premium subscribers, it says, can now go live with Gemini on the first-generation Home Mini and Nest Hub. That covers the fabric-topped puck Google announced in October 2017 and the smart display that launched a year later as the Google Home Hub before being rebranded Nest Hub.

Gemini Live is the free-flowing conversation mode — you talk, it answers, you interrupt and follow up without saying “Hey Google” again each time. Getting it running on hardware this old is a genuinely good outcome, and worth saying so. Most companies would have used a chip generation as the excuse to declare those speakers finished.

The part worth being clear-eyed about is the gate. Google Home Premium is the paid subscription that replaced Nest Aware, and Gemini Live sits in the Standard tier at $10 a month or $100 a year, with an Advanced tier at $20 a month or $200 a year that adds camera-focused AI features. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get Home Premium bundled in.

So the actual shape of this: a speaker you already own, which has been sitting on a shelf getting quietly worse as Assistant features were retired around it, gets its most capable feature back — for a recurring fee, indefinitely, on hardware you already own outright. That is a legitimate business model, and it is also a good reason to check what you are already paying for before adding another line item. It is the same pattern androidpure flagged when Samsung put the Galaxy Watch Ultra2’s dive features behind a monthly subscription: the hardware is bought outright, the capability is rented.

Gemini for Home now remembers 15 minutes of conversation

The second change in the July update is a longer memory. Google says the conversational memory window now runs to 15 minutes, and that it applies across the whole of Gemini for Home rather than to one surface.

In practice that means context survives between requests. Ask the speaker to turn the bedroom thermostat down, then come back ten minutes later and say “make it one more” — it should know what “it” is. Anyone who has had to restate a whole command because an assistant forgot the subject mid-conversation will appreciate why this matters more than it sounds.

It is also worth understanding what a 15-minute window means on an always-on device in your house: for that period, the system is carrying the content of what you said as usable context rather than discarding it after each exchange. Google has not published a breakdown of where that context is held or for how long beyond the window, and it is a fair thing to want documented on a device with a permanently open microphone.

The rest of the July Google Home update, in brief

  • Clearer automation saving guidance — Google now shows an alert when you save an automation that has conditions but no starter, so it does not silently fail to run.
  • Expanded window covering controls — updated controls and labels for smart blinds and window coverings, making it easier to set a precise shade position rather than just open or closed.

When you will see it

Google logged these changes on its “What’s new in Google Home” page on July 23 and has not published a device-by-device rollout schedule for them. Changes of this kind arrive server-side, so there is nothing to sideload or manually update — if Gemini Live has not appeared on your first-gen Home Mini or Nest Hub yet, confirm the Google account on the speaker is the one carrying the Home Premium subscription, then wait it out. Google’s changelog page is the place to watch: it is where the July items were published, without an accompanying blog post or announcement.
