Motorola says it will not release monthly security patches for its phones

Motorola has been oft criticized on social websites like reddit, for its incredibly obnoxious customer service, which sometimes is nothing short of frustrating. But it appears that isn’t applicable to hardware issues alone, as Ars Technica found out earlier this week

Moto Z Droid

When the recently launched Moto Z was under scrutiny by the blog’s reviewers, they mentioned that the device wouldn’t be receiving any security updates on a monthly basis, though the Lenovo owned company does not publicly state so.

This doesn’t mean they won’t be getting any updates at all, the devices will get the security patches, but not as soon as you would expect it to, but rather on a delayed timeline. In order to clarify on this, the reviewers reached out to the Chicago based company, which confirmed in an official statement that it is indeed true.

Motorola says the reason it won’t release monthly security updates, is because of the testing process which makes it difficult for it to release the said updates for all devices. So, it will instead continue to bundle security updates for its devices and stick to its Maintenance Release and OS upgrade protocols. This includes the Moto Z (Droid Edition), and the Moto G4 as well.

This announcement by Motorola is pretty shocking, especially when compared to Xaomi, a company which is notorious for not releasing major Android upgrades at all, but still manages to patch in security updates every month. If Xiaomi can do it, why can’t Motorola?
