WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging service, owned by Facebook, has hit a major landmark.

The app now has one billion users across all platforms.

And these numbers are for active users, and not just for the number of installs for the app. It took WhatsApp seven years, to achieve this milestone.

Last year, the app became a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) service , which allowed WhatsApp users to call each other on a data connection, thus helping them avoid regular phone call charges. It is rumored that WhatsApp will soon introduce video calls as well.

And earlier this month, WhatsApp announced that it is permanently doing away with the oremium subscriptions for the app, which it used to charge users on a yearly basis. The instant messaging app is now available completely for free, without ads, across all major mobile platforms. This will of course, give it a significant boost in the future as well.
