Yesterday, we reported about the recent fiasco which Pushbullet caused, when it announced its decision to go Pro.
The service locked away many of its free features behind a paywall, and to use these features, you have to cough up $40/year.
Pushbullet took to Reddit to reach out to users and address their concerns in an AMA. It claimed that without a Pro subscription, the service would die. We do acknowledge that developers need money for their work, and that managing server costs isn’t easy. But nobody wants to pay the ridiculous sum it is demanding, and it comes as no surpise that Pushbullet got slammed by users who refused to accept the fact that its Pro version is worth paying for.
Paying for an app is not something we oppose, I myself have a Lastpass premium subscription which costs just $12 a year, a three year Kaspersky subscription, and have spent several hundred dollars on countless number of games on Android, Steam, GOG and more.
But there is absolutely no way, I will overpay for something trivial, like sending SMS from Pushbullet, and neither should you.
Pushbullet should have come up with a second tier for users who just use it for SMS and universal copy paste, and maybe if it charged $1/month for this, it would be a reasonable amount, and we think most users would buy an year’s subscription in the blink of an eye. Personally, we think the other features can be skipped, as you can always use cloud storage services to send and store files.
