Google Play Lets You Install Your Own AI-Built Apps

Google Play now lets Android users install apps they built themselves, without signing up as a developer. You create the app in Google AI Studio, then install it on your own phone through Play. Your standard Google account is all you need.

Google announced the change on October 13. The rollout starts in select markets, including the U.S., for users aged 18 and over. Google’s post names only the U.S., so other countries are not yet clear.

How Google Play personal apps work

Google’s pitch is short: “Using Google AI Studio, you can vibe code a custom Android app.” Vibe coding means describing what you want in plain language and letting AI write the code. Once the app is built, it installs on your own device through Google Play.

Google says these personal apps stay separate from the public Play catalog. Its mock-up shows them in their own personal library screen inside Play. If you want a lighter starting point, Google’s Playground tool turns a text prompt into a playable game.

No Play review for personal apps

Google’s own mock-up of the library screen carries an important line. It says only the creator can see and install these apps, and that they are not reviewed by Google Play. In plain terms, an app you build skips the store review that public apps go through.

Google says personal apps stay private, secure and separate from the public store. That is Google’s description, and androidpure has not tested it. Google’s announcement does not explain how a personal app handles your data. It also does not say whether Play Protect scans these apps.

Sharing with friends comes later

For now, a personal app is yours alone. Google says that in the coming months you will be able to share personal apps with a close circle of friends and family. That feature is not live yet.

Game Finder and cars

The same Play update brings Game Finder, Play’s AI tool for discovering games, to U.S. users in English. Google says more markets are coming soon. We looked at how Game Finder builds a gamer profile before launch.

In cars with Google built-in, the updated Play Store now adapts its layout to the vehicle’s screen.
