Apple Reportedly Cuts iPhone 18 Pro Orders as Demand Cools

Apple has asked its suppliers to scale back component production for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this month. That comes from a Nikkei Asia report, relayed by MacRumors and GSMArena. The reported reason is demand that has come in softer than Apple planned, after a $100 price increase across the Pro line.

How big is the cut?

The size of the reduction depends on which retelling you read. MacRumors describes October orders falling by at least 15 percent. GSMArena’s phrasing is up to 15 percent. Techmeme’s summary of the same Nikkei story puts the range at 15 to 20 percent.

All three trace back to one paywalled Nikkei report. That is a single source relayed three times, not three independent confirmations. The safe reading is a cut of about 15 percent, with one account pushing it as high as 20 percent.

Nikkei attributes the information to people familiar with the matter, not to named Apple executives. The report also says Apple has been more cautious about shipments since early September. Rising memory-chip costs are cited as a factor there. As of October 9, no comment from Apple on the reported order cut has surfaced.

The price hike behind it

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. Both are $100 more than the models they replace.

Apple has publicly blamed rising AI-driven memory-chip costs for price increases, and not only on iPhones. The same explanation has accompanied higher prices on MacBooks, iPads, and the iPhone 16 and 17 models. Hold that framing next to this report for a moment. Buyers were told the component market forced the higher price. If that price is what cooled demand, the memory-cost squeeze has now landed on both sides of the counter.

One conflicting data point

GSMArena flags a separate report pointing the other way, which claims the iPhone 18 Pro has outsold its predecessor in China. The two accounts conflict, so the picture is not settled. Weak demand is what the Nikkei report describes. It is not something Apple has confirmed, nor something every data source agrees on.

Apple is also not the only company trimming output this quarter. Samsung is reported to be cutting Q4 smartphone production by 20 to 30 percent. That points to caution across the industry rather than a problem unique to the iPhone 18 Pro.

For shoppers, an order cut is not the same thing as a shortage. Fewer units built in October says more about how Apple reads its own sell-through than about what you will find in stock. If demand really has softened at $1,199, the more useful signal to watch is carrier and retailer promotions over the next few weeks.
