Google Messages may be getting built-in games you can play inside a conversation. Code strings pulled from a recent beta build name nine titles, from Chess to Darts. None of this is official, so treat it as work in progress rather than a launch.

The strings turned up in an APK teardown of the Messages build messages.android_20261002_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic. Android Authority did the teardown after a tip from a developer on X. The feature carries the internal codename Midnight.
The Nine Games Named in the Code
The code references a specific slate of titles. There is no indication that all nine ship together, or that the list is final:
- Chess
- Checkers
- Pool
- Darts
- Basketball
- Cup Pong
- Four in a Row
- Word Scramble
- Crazy 8s
Anyone who has used GamePigeon on iMessage will recognise the shape of that lineup. It is the same mix of board games and casual arcade filler.
How It Would Work Is Still Unknown
This is the part the code does not answer. There is no detail on whether matches run asynchronously or in real time. Nothing in the teardown describes the interface either, and no mockups were found.
A second open question is reach. Google Messages is an Android app, and chat threads routinely include people on other platforms. The code does not say what happens in those conversations.
What an APK Teardown Can and Cannot Tell You
Teardowns surface code that developers have written but not switched on. That makes them a reliable signal that someone at Google is building something. It is a much weaker signal that the thing will ever reach users. Features found this way get cut, renamed, or abandoned all the time.
As of October 7, no official statement about games in Messages has surfaced, and no release timeline is attached to any of it. Until one arrives, the nine names above are the entire story.
Messages has had a busier few weeks on the functional side. Google recently flipped the app’s swipe gestures and confirmed an RCS delivery bug with a fix rolling out. Whether games arrive before or after those basics settle down is anyone’s guess.
