Google looks set to remove Safety Signal from the Pixel Watch 2 and the LTE version of the Pixel Watch 3. Code strings inside the latest build of the Pixel Watch app say so outright. What the code does not say is when the shutdown happens, or whether anything takes its place.

The finding comes from an APK teardown of Pixel Watch app version 5.1.0.990450614 by Android Authority. One string in that build reads: “Safety signal is going away. This feature will no longer be available soon.” That is unreleased interface copy sitting in app code, not a public statement from Google. As of October 7, no official statement about the change has surfaced.
What Safety Signal Does on a Pixel Watch
Safety Signal gives an LTE-capable Pixel Watch a limited cellular link of its own. The point is that it works without a paid carrier plan for the watch itself. If your phone is out of range, the watch can still reach the network for a specific set of emergency functions:
- Safety Check
- Emergency SOS
- Fall Detection
- Calls
That is the whole value proposition. You buy the LTE hardware once, skip the monthly watch line, and still keep a safety net when the phone is not nearby.
Who Is Affected
The code points at two devices: the Pixel Watch 2 and the Pixel Watch 3 LTE. Owners who already pay for an active data plan on the watch should not notice anything. Their watch already has a full cellular connection, so emergency features are not relying on Safety Signal to get out.
Everyone else on those two models is the group that stands to lose something. That includes buyers who chose the LTE hardware and skipped the monthly watch line.
No Date, No Word on a Replacement
This is a removal, not a redesign, and it is worth naming as such. Safety Signal is the fallback for owners who never took out a watch plan. For them, the change narrows what the watch can do in an emergency. Families who bought one of these watches for fall detection or SOS coverage sit squarely in that group.
Google may well have a replacement in the works. It would be unfair to assume otherwise from a single code string. But the in-app notice offers no date and names nothing that follows. Readers who rely on the feature are being told it is going, and little else.
