Pixel Face Unlock May Finally Work in the Dark, Beta Code Suggests

Pixel face unlock works well right up until the lights go out. In a dark room, or in bed at night, it often simply refuses to recognise you. Code found in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 suggests Google is finally building something for that specific scenario, under the name Face Active Illumination.

The find comes from Android Authority’s own teardown of the beta, published under its Authority Insights banner. Nothing here has been announced by Google, so the feature’s final shape and timing are both open questions.

Why Pixel face unlock struggles in low light

Pixel face unlock is certified as a Class 3 biometric, the strictest tier Android defines. That rating is about how hard the system is to spoof, not about how well it sees in the dark. Google does it with the regular front camera rather than dedicated infrared hardware. No IR illuminator means no way to light your face when the room cannot.

That is the gap Face Active Illumination appears to target. Android Authority’s reading of the code is that it boosts display brightness to throw light on your face during an unlock attempt. That mechanism is the publication’s inference from the code, not a stated Google design.

What the code exposes

The strings point to more than a single on-off switch. Android Authority found a brightness-scale control, which suggests you would set how strong the effect gets. Alongside it sit toggles tied to four specific contexts:

  • Bedtime
  • Driving
  • Dark environments
  • Do Not Disturb

What each toggle actually does is not clear from the code. Bedtime and driving are both situations where a sudden burst of screen brightness would be unwelcome, so some of these may govern when the effect is suppressed. That reading is speculation on our part, not something the strings state.

The Project Toscana question

Android Authority notes a possible link to Project Toscana, a previously reported Google effort to overhaul facial authentication across Pixel phones and Chromebooks. That connection is unconfirmed, and the code itself does not establish it. Worth filing away rather than relying on.

When it might arrive

Unreleased beta code is not a shipping commitment. Features found this way sometimes arrive in the next quarterly drop. Others land much later, and some get cut entirely. Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 is the build in question, and our coverage of that release and its Pixel 6 cutoff has the wider context.

If this does ship, the realistic expectation is a feature that makes a dim room workable. It is unlikely to match a dedicated infrared system.
