If you bought an iPhone 18 Pro this year, the 12GB of RAM inside it is the same amount the iPhone 17 Pro shipped with. A new leak claims that was not the original plan. Leaker Instant Digital says on Weibo that Apple had intended 16GB for both the iPhone 18 Pro line and the iPhone Duo foldable. Treat this as an unconfirmed single-source claim.

Why the iPhone 18 Pro RAM figure matters
RAM is the spec that decides how much the phone can hold open at once. It also sets the ceiling on how large an on-device AI model can be. A 16GB tier would have given Apple meaningful headroom for both as its AI features expand.
Two generations of Pro iPhones now sitting on the same 12GB is the part buyers should note. This is not a downgrade, because nothing was taken away. It is a bump that reportedly was planned and did not ship.
The DRAM shortage sitting behind it
MacRumors ties the apparent change of plan to the global memory shortage. That context is the most consequential part of the story. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that memory costs pushed Apple into internal discussions about raising the iPhone Duo’s starting price. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo separately reported that DRAM shortages forced Apple to scale back its 2026 hardware shipment plans.
Put those together and the reader-facing version is simple. The same shortage that reportedly trimmed a spec also shaped Apple’s pre-launch pricing discussions. That combination is worth naming plainly, because it is the opposite of what a spec-bump cycle normally delivers. Gurman’s reporting described discussions rather than a decision.
What is on the record
- iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max RAM: 12GB, confirmed through Xcode 27 data in a September 9, 2026 report. This is the one hard data point in the chain.
- iPhone Duo RAM: also expected at 12GB, though Xcode data for the foldable was not available at the time of that report.
- Pre-launch forecasts: Kuo called 12GB for the iPhone 18 line back in April 2025. Jeff Pu said the same for the Pro models and the foldable in January 2026.
- Supplier: a March 2026 report from The Bell named Samsung as the supplier of the Duo’s 12GB memory modules.
- iPhone Duo dates: preorders open October 16, 2026, with availability from October 23, 2026.
How much weight to give it
Instant Digital’s post does not say when 16GB was under consideration. An early engineering target is a very different thing from a late cut, and the leak does not distinguish between them. Apple does not comment on unshipped configurations, so this will likely stay unverified.
What the analyst record does support is that 12GB was the expected figure for well over a year before launch. That makes a dramatic last-minute reversal less likely than a target that never firmed up. For anyone weighing the Duo ahead of its October 16 preorders, the memory figure is settled enough to plan around. Our earlier look at iPhone Duo App Store submissions covers the software side of that launch.
