Strava Responds to Smartwatch Sync Failures: Status Page Says Otherwise

Strava has responded on the record to the run of complaints about its app failing to sync with smartwatches. A company spokesperson told Android Authority that the problems are not connected to each other. The spokesperson added that integration differences between watch platforms mean occasional breakage is expected.

The issues noted are isolated and disconnected from one another. While we work with each of our device partners to make integration with Strava as smooth as possible, every ecosystem has a slightly different integration, so issues occasionally occur.

Three Ecosystems at Once

Here is where the explanation sits awkwardly against the reports. The complaints are not confined to one watch brand. Users on Samsung Galaxy Watch, Garmin and Apple Watch devices have all described activities failing to reach Strava.

Neither Strava nor Android Authority has confirmed a cause, so nobody outside the company can say whether these failures share one. What is clear is the difference between the company’s framing and the reported scope. Describing failures that span three major watch platforms as isolated is a statement about scale, and it is not a diagnosis.

The Status Page Does Not Reflect It

Strava’s public status page showed no active incident when we checked on October 6. Its most recent resolved entries are both from late September. One was a Garmin upload delay on September 28, fixed the same day at 20:03 PDT. The other was a general upload degradation on September 27, fixed at 11:24 PDT. Neither has been confirmed as the same problem users are hitting now.

So Strava is acknowledging issues to a reporter while its own dashboard tells every other user that everything is fine. For anyone whose workout did not upload, the status page is the first place they look. An all-clear there sends them hunting for a fault in their own watch or their own account. That is a real cost to the user, and opening an incident is entirely within Strava’s control.

What You Can Do Right Now

  • Do not delete the activity yet. Leave the recording where it is until you have confirmed it reached Strava.
  • Check the source app first. If you record through Samsung Health, Garmin Connect or Apple Health, confirm the activity is there before blaming Strava.
  • Note the date and device. If you report the failure, say which watch platform you use, because the complaints currently span three of them.

Strava has now said what it thinks is happening, and the statement arrived in Android Authority’s update on October 6 at 03:28 AM ET. Until the status page reflects it, users hitting the problem are troubleshooting without any confirmation that it is not their fault.
