Apple has set a deadline for developers. From April 2027, any app or game submitted to the App Store will need to include screenshots for the iPhone Duo. Apple published the requirement in a developer-news post on October 5. The same post confirms that iPhone Duo-optimised apps and games can be submitted through App Store Connect starting now.

What developers can do today
App Store Connect is already accepting iPhone Duo-optimised submissions. Apple has also published updated screenshot and app-preview specifications for the device. A preview tool inside App Store Connect lets developers visualise how their assets will look on the iPhone Duo.
The device itself goes on sale on October 23, 2026, a date Apple restated in the same post. That leaves a short window to get optimised builds through review before launch day.
What happens to apps that do nothing
According to MacRumors, existing App Store apps will run on the iPhone Duo automatically. The catch is in how they fill the screen. MacRumors reports that dynamic resizing to the inner display’s full area requires the iOS 27.1 SDK, via Xcode 27.1 or later. Apps that have not been rebuilt will be letterboxed with black borders.
Apple’s own developer post does not mention the black borders, so treat that behaviour as MacRumors’ reporting rather than an Apple statement.
For buyers, the takeaway is reassuring but limited. Existing apps should still install and run on a day-one iPhone Duo. Many of them will simply be running letterboxed until their developers ship updated builds.
Why the April 2027 date matters
The screenshot requirement is the part with teeth. It applies to every submission, not only to apps that have been rebuilt for the foldable. From April 2027, even developers with no interest in the Duo will have to produce store assets sized for it.
The gap between the October 23 launch and that deadline is about five months. Early buyers should expect the app catalogue to be optimised unevenly over that period. For Google’s take on what the iPhone Duo means for foldable apps, see our earlier report.
