WhatsApp Is Blocking Logins on Phones Running Outdated Android or iOS

WhatsApp has started blocking some users from logging back in until they update their phone’s operating system. This is a server-side change, so there is no app update to install. If the screen appears for your account, you cannot skip past it.

What the block screen does

WABetaInfo reported the change first, and GSMArena has since covered it as well. Affected users see a screen explaining that their phone’s software is too old to log in. It directs them to their device settings to check for and install an OS update. There is no option to continue without doing so.

The rollout is gradual rather than instant. It is reaching specific accounts on both iOS and Android. Two people on similarly aged phones may not see it at the same time.

Which OS versions trigger it

This is the part nobody can answer yet. Both WABetaInfo and GSMArena state plainly that WhatsApp has not disclosed which Android or iOS version numbers set off the block. As of October 6, no official statement from WhatsApp or Meta has surfaced explaining the threshold.

The reasoning, and who it leaves behind

The security logic offered by both outlets is their own reading, not a company explanation. Old operating systems accumulate known, actively exploited flaws. A messaging app is an attractive route for malware to spread through trusted contacts, even when the messages themselves are end-to-end encrypted.

The cost of that tightening lands somewhere specific. Plenty of people run older phones because a newer one is not affordable, or because the manufacturer stopped shipping OS updates years ago. For them there is no update to install, and no obvious route back into an app many markets treat as basic infrastructure.

What to do if you see it

Open your phone’s settings and look for a system or software update. Install whatever is offered, restart the phone, and try logging in again. If your phone reports that it is already up to date, your manufacturer has likely ended OS support for that model. In that case, a newer device may be the only option.

Update support varies sharply between devices. See our report on One UI 9 reaching carrier-locked Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 units in the US.
