Google has started rolling out Gemini skills directly inside the Gemini chat experience, worldwide. The company’s September 30 release note describes it as a global rollout for chat users. One limit is attached in a footnote: access is currently open to users aged 18 and over, with more users to follow.

What has changed since our earlier report
Skills are the feature replacing Gems, the custom-instruction tool Google is retiring. When that retirement broke, skills were reported as limited to Pro and Ultra subscribers, as our earlier report noted. The access picture has moved on since then.
Skills first debuted inside Gemini’s Spark agent. 9to5Google reports they now reach free-tier users who don’t have Spark access, too. Google’s own release note points the same way. The only gate it lists is the age requirement, and it mentions no subscription tier at all. For anyone who read about Gems going away and assumed the replacement sat behind a paywall, that is a meaningful change.
How Gemini skills work in practice
The invocation method is the clearest improvement. Instead of navigating to a separate Gem manager, you type a slash in the main Gemini prompt box and pick a skill. That keeps the whole thing inside the chat window.
The use cases cited for skills include prepping a presentation, matching a particular writing style, and pulling different perspectives on a topic. Existing Gems will be migrated across automatically, so there is nothing to rebuild by hand.
Not at full parity yet
Skills do not yet match everything Gems could do. The missing pieces are due over the coming weeks. They include shareable links and the ability to attach file context from Drive and notebooks.
The retirement timeline, per 9to5Google, is staggered by account type:
- Personal Google Accounts: lose access to Gems starting in November 2026
- Workspace business, enterprise and non-profit: migration happens in March 2027
- Education users: migration happens in June 2027
Our earlier report carried a specific date of November 17, 2026, taken from an in-app Gemini notice. 9to5Google’s latest report does not restate that date. It says only that personal accounts lose Gems starting in November.
Rollout
Skills began appearing on September 30 for Gemini chat users globally, subject to the 18-and-over gate. Other customers can expect access in the coming weeks, per 9to5Google. If the slash command is not in your prompt box yet, the rollout may not have reached your account.
