Google has rebuilt Android’s wireless debugging stack. ADB Wi-Fi 2.0, posted on the Android Developers Blog on 9 September 2026, is meant to stop the drop-outs that made wireless ADB a coin flip on a busy home network.
This is not a consumer feature drop. It matters if you sideload, run scrcpy, disable bloat with ADB, or actually ship Android apps. The catch: it needs Android 17 on the device, plus current desktop tools.
Wireless debugging on Android is now faster, more reliable, and easier to set up than ever.

What ADB Wi-Fi 2.0 changes
Google reworked all three pieces:
- adb server — a new mDNS stack replaces Bonjour and legacy mDNS, so the connection is less likely to die when the network changes or a device sleeps.
- adbd on the phone — wireless debugging turns itself off on an untrusted network and comes back on a network you have allowed. That is a reliability fix and a small safety one.
- Android Studio — enable Wireless debugging on the device and it should show up in Device Manager, instead of hiding behind a pairing flow people could not find.
Google’s numbers, from the same post: auto-connection success is up 32%, and connection speed is up 66% for 90% of connections. Those are Google’s measurements, not an independent benchmark.
What you need
- Android 17 on the phone, tablet, Wear OS watch, or Android TV
- Android SDK Platform-Tools 37.0.0
- Android Studio Quail 3 or later
- Workstation and device on the same Wi-Fi network
Pairing is the usual QR / pairing-code path: Developer options → Wireless debugging, then the pair-over-Wi-Fi control in Android Studio’s Device Manager.
If your phone is still on Android 16, this stack is not your update. It also does not change Google’s earlier interest in locking down on-device ADB — that fight lives in a separate story. Wi-Fi 2.0 is the cable-free debugging path getting less fragile, not a new permission model.
