Samsung Ends Support for Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, Flip 3

Samsung has ended software support for three more devices. The Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 no longer appear on Samsung’s own security-update scope page, confirming that all four have received their final update.

Samsung’s official security-update page lists current wearables down to the Galaxy Watch5 series (Watch5, Watch5 44mm, Watch5 Pro) as the oldest smartwatches still receiving quarterly patches. The Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic are absent. On the foldable side, the page’s current-devices tier starts at the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4, with the Z Fold5 through Z Fold8 (and Flip5 through Flip8) in a separate, still-updated group. The Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 do not appear anywhere on the page.

What Samsung Promised, and What It Delivered

None of this is a broken promise. When the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 launched in August 2021, Samsung committed to four years of major Android updates and five years of security patches. Both phones got their last big Android update in 2024 and kept receiving quarterly security patches right up to a final update pushed out in late August 2026, exactly five years after launch, before Samsung pulled them from its support page this week.

The Galaxy Watch 4 series followed the same pattern on the wearable side. Samsung promised four generations of software updates for its first Wear OS-powered watch, and it delivered all four: Wear OS 3.5/One UI Watch 4.5, Wear OS 4/One UI 5 Watch, Wear OS 5/One UI 6 Watch, and a final Wear OS 6/One UI 8 Watch update. The Watch 4 was notable as Samsung’s first smartwatch to move off Tizen and onto Wear OS, and it is now the first Wear OS Galaxy Watch to lose support.

The Real Story Is How Much Samsung’s Policy Has Changed Since

Here’s the part worth paying attention to. Four years of OS updates and five years of security patches was Samsung’s standard commitment back in 2021. It no longer is. Samsung’s current flagship phones, including the Galaxy S26 lineup, ship with seven years of both OS and security updates, a full two years longer than what Fold 3 and Flip 3 buyers signed up for. Anyone who bought a Fold 3 or Flip 3 in 2021 got exactly what Samsung promised at the time, but that promise looks thin next to what a Galaxy buyer gets today for the same money.

That gap matters more for the Fold 3 and Flip 3 than for a typical phone, since foldables carry a steep upfront price and were pitched as forward-looking, premium hardware. Owners who held onto their device expecting Samsung’s support to eventually catch up to its newer flagships now know it never will, at least not for this generation.

What This Means If You Still Use One

Losing support does not brick these devices. The Watch 4, Watch 4 Classic, Z Fold 3, and Z Flip 3 will keep working exactly as they do today. What stops is any patch for security vulnerabilities discovered from here on, leaving them gradually more exposed the longer they stay in use.

Samsung will still accept any of these four devices as a trade-in toward a newer model, though the trade-in value on hardware this old will be modest. For Fold 3 and Flip 3 owners in particular, the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 sit one tier below the newest foldables on Samsung’s own support page, suggesting they are next in line as this update cycle continues.
