Samsung Is Retiring Its Quick Measure AR App on December 31

Samsung is shutting down Quick Measure, the augmented-reality app that lets a Galaxy phone measure objects and distances using its rear camera. Official support ends on 31 December 2026. After that date the app disappears from download and stops receiving updates, including security updates.

The announcement went up in Samsung’s own Members community and was surfaced by the tipster Shiyar on X. It is a small app with a niche following, but the way Samsung is winding it down is worth spelling out, because the reassuring part of the notice does less than it appears to.

What happens on 31 December

Samsung says the app will keep working on devices where it is already installed. That is the good news, and it is real as far as it goes. Three things stop after the cutoff date, though.

  • No new downloads. If Quick Measure is not on your phone by 31 December, you will not be able to install it.
  • No updates. Samsung stops shipping fixes of any kind for the app.
  • No compatibility work. Samsung has said explicitly that it will not maintain Quick Measure against future operating system releases.

That third point is the one that matters. “You can keep using it” and “we will not make it work with the next One UI” are close to contradictory in practice. A Galaxy phone that takes a major Android upgrade in 2027 may simply find the app broken, and there will be no fix coming. The practical advice, if you use Quick Measure at all, is straightforward: do not uninstall it after the cutoff, because you will not get it back.

No reason, no replacement

Samsung has not explained why the app is going. It has not named a successor either. The notice says only that the company plans to return with improved services in future, which is the kind of sentence that can mean a rebuilt version next year or nothing at all.

This is a feature being withdrawn, and it should be described as one. Quick Measure used the Galaxy camera and AR processing, with depth sensing, to give you a length or a distance when you did not have a tape measure to hand. It shipped as part of what buyers were sold. Retiring it removes something from the phone and offers a promise in its place, and a promise is not a feature. If the functionality does return inside a larger Samsung app, that will be a fair outcome; until then, the honest summary is that Galaxy owners are losing a tool and getting a sentence.

None of this is being done behind anyone’s back. Samsung published the notice itself, and December is nearly four months away, which is more warning than app retirements usually come with. The gap is in the detail, not the disclosure.
